I did for mine, call me a wimp if you like but there was no freaking way I was going to have my gums cut into and a dude stradled over my body with pliers twisting teeth out of my sorry attempt at a numbed up mouth.

I woke up 30mins later, had someone drive me home, took my 800mg IB's spit up an assload of blood for a few hours, and called it done :)

My wisdom teeth were horribly impacted. They literally had to break part of my jaw (2 flaps of bone) to get at 2 of the teeth, and the other 2 had grown in horizontally and had to be dug out from deep in the other half of my jaw. Because of how much they had to do, I had to have mine done in an actual hospital, with general anaesthetic. Oddly enough, the anaesthesiologist was the father of a friend of mine at the time. Of course, I had a mild allergic reaction to the knockout drug used, and the first thing I did when I woke up was puke blood. Then, through a mistake, they'd given me the default hospital tray, with the drink being orange juice, and of course I grabbed the drink to wash the taste of puke out of my mouth.....

Well, lets just say that stomach acid followed by citric acid in a mouth with huge gaping bloody pits was... uh, unpleasant.

I had them done in high school, like right after the start of xmas break. I spent my entire xmas vacation that year recovering and mostly eating through a straw. Not fun. Of course, back then they were willing to prescibe percodan to a 16 year old, so I wasn't all there for that time, but hey... heh.

when they pulled mine out, he bruised the jaw nerve, and the left side of my jaw (tongue, cheek, lips) were numb for 18 months

developed an interesting slur in my speech for a bit too

Sithos wrote:I got a good laugh out of the first link Diek posted in regards to the American living in Canada and about the health care. If you want to take the word of a pissed off welfare mom about our health care then that's fine.

She states that she was told to return home when she went into labor. Same happened to my wife with both births. We jumped the gun and ran there as soon as it started. Both times we were told to come back when she is in full labor. No sense occupying a bed when you are hours and hours away from being anywhere near ready to deliver.

As for the epidural my wife had them both times and never had to pay 1 single cent for them. Unsure why she says that she had to pay for hers.In all likelihood it was to bolster her story.

Delivery rooms at our hospitals stopped supplying pads after a birth ages ago. Yep it's a cost saving measure. But if you can't afford the 5 bucks or whatnot for pads then why the fuck are you having kids?

The rest of her story sounds quite made up in regards to holding her down, covering her mouth so nobody could hear her scream etc. Doctors can and have lost their license for much less even here in town.

She goes on to state that OHIP (Ontario Hospitalization Insurance Plan which every Canadian Citizen gets when he/she is born, free of charge) does not cover dental or eyeglass. She is partly correct. It covers a yearly optometry checkup and dental visit. It covers the basic dental care items such as cleanings and fillings and will even cover root canals or tooth pulling if the dentist deems it necessary. But if you walk in saying you want them whitened or have crowns put on then you will pay out of pocket. In regards to eyeglasses/contacts you are on your own for those unless your job has insurance specific to that.

As for me I am a Canadian living in Canada. I enjoy our health care system. Yes sometimes there is a wait. Patients are not seen on a first come first serve basis. Rather those that need the most attention get it first and it trickles down from there. Yes, some Canadians are going to the states for surgery. But by and large it is the wealthy Canadian who are able to buy their way past the wait list so they can get their surgery. Or because of the fact that the states has many more specialists in a certain field due to having a larger population to draw from. If there are only 10 of a certain specialty here in Canada there is likey to be 50+ in the states.

Are there problems with our health care? Sure there are. It would be near impossible to get a perfect free health care setup. But overall for the overwhelming majority of Canadians it suits us just fine.

Nice, I was hoping one of you guys would post the facts.

Now I've got a question.... they charge out of pocket for a crown, you said, but give free root canals if they deem it necessary. far as i know, you don't get a root canal w/o putting a crown over the sponges that fill the empty canals, so why do they make you pay for one and not the other? is porcelain a rare commodity in canada? hah. here in the states a root canal + crown totals about $1500 or more.... i had one about a year ago when i got a deep filling and the metal reacted with my nerve and killed it when the local wore off. leaving me paralyzed in pain until somebody drove me back to get another shot. that felt so Fing bad. i'd rather watch someone cut my fingers off one at a time

This isn't true, the metal doesn't react with your nerve and kill it. The cause of your nerve dying was something else.

Leah, the sooner you have 'em done, the better. I know someone who waited, and the roots of hers literally wound around her jaw, so they had to go in with tiny hammers and shatter the roots into bits and then dig the bits out. So, the sooner you get 'em out, the less impacted they will be, and the less chance you run of something else going wrong.

Just do take my advice and DON'T drink Orange Juice right when you wake up after.... rofl. Man, did that hurt.

I have mine fully grown in with no problems *shrug*.

I had the two nearby teeth removed at a younger age due to injury, however lol So they just basically took up the space, so to speak.

you're right. the filling was a distal amalgam (4) that was really deep. a part of the tooth from a previous filling chipped away and to correct it they had to go deeper. he probly exposed the pulp

i know, i know. i'll do it within the next year.

there just isn't enough room for 'em in my mouth. if i let them keep growing in, they'll push my other teeth around and undo a lot of good done by braces.

I've only worked for one dentist who (I suspected) would purposely cause a nerve exposure. One out of 16 doctors, and honestly, I can't even say she did it on purpose, or just had a heavy hand. Once the high speed hand piece is used to remove tooth structure, they use the slower one, which only removes decay. This doctor would use a huge round 8 bur for that, which is ridiculous.

But yah, yours could have just gone that far (the decay) or they kept drilling to China for the hell of it.

Godamn I hate the dentist. And you fuckers are making me hate him more and more.

My worst experience was that I went in for an impression for a retainer (I grind my teeth when I sleep. And sometimes my tourettes syndrome makes me knock my teeth together when I get stressed out, so my teeth take a beating, on top of dipping a can and a half of snuff a day). I told her before they started that I have a really bad gag reflex, but they didnt listen. When they stuck that huge fucking goo filled metal thing in my mouth, i knew right away i was gonna puke. So I started motioning and trying to tell them to take it out, but of course, they ignored me. Next thing you now, BLAM, projectile puke all over the nurses chest and face.
then afterwards, the stupid fucking cunt said all mad, couldnt you have warned me!! I said well godamn why do you think I was wavin my hands around and pointing at my throat?

I've never been puked on, but I've had lots of people freak out with xrays or impressions in their mouths.

There are ways to go around that...she's obviously retarded.

A. Grinding sucks, makes me wake up with a stiff and sore jaw

2. Ya snuff. Been doing it since I was 14 or 15. I brush my teeth 3 times a day and my teeth are still white as can be. Its the sugars in the snuff that cause the teeth to rot out like you see in pictures =) although, brushing doesnt ward off cancer. But it does help gum recession too. Its mor elike a can a day instead of a can and a half. I dont use as much as others go through because i put one in after breakfast, keep it in til lunch, put a dip in after lunch and keep it in most of the da til after work. eat, put another one in until whenever. and then another dip as fall asleep, then wake up at 2am and take it up.

d. Yup, i was diagnose when I was 12. Not a bad case compared to what some kids suffer. Some I see on TV I feel soooo bad for because I know what its like. Completely impossible to contain...i dont really know how to xplain it...they just, happen, no matter how much you think about it, it just comes out. One of the few things in life you just cant help doing. I used to be worse and make noises and shit, but now its down to just blinking and little noises in my throat. Now if I get off my Klonopin for a day, its fucking misearable.

A. me too, it sucks. but at least now i know why my jaw is sore--before josh told me about the grinding, i just thought i had lockjaw or something lol (also harrison who is in your bed at night to be telling you you grind your teeth?!)

2. i'm glad your teeth are in good shape but there are so many other reasons chew = ew. mostly i just don't like the look of a wad of gross in a guy's mouth AND there's all the empty soda bottles or cans or whatevs that become spittoons (which looks gross and smells, too) and then what if someone accidentally takes a drink? eewww

d. i'm sorry you have to deal with that :(
