House passed strip search bill...

Postby Phlegm » Sat Sep 23, 2006 9:33 pm

The Student Teacher Safety Act of 2006 (HR 5295)

http://www.drugpolicy.org/news/092006search.cfm

A bill approved by the U.S. House yesterday would require school districts around the country to establish policies making it easier for teachers and school officials to conduct wide scale searches of students. These searches could take the form of pat-downs, bag searches, or strip searches depending on how administrators interpret the law.

DPA supporters and others who opposed this outrageous bill called their members of Congress this week to express their disapproval. However, House leaders circumvented the usual legislative procedure to bring the bill to a quick vote. It did not pass through the committee process, but went straight to the House floor. There, it was passed by a simple voice vote, so constituents cannot even find out how their Representative voted.

The bill moves next to the Senate, but it is unlikely to be considered there this session.

Its not law. It needs to pass the Senate, where it can be filibustered rather easily.

Private education is not available to everyone.
It is against the law to not send your child to school.

Talk to unions and democrats who rail against real freedom of choice in regards to schools, and voucher programs.

Also, you forgot people can homeschool, as well.

Tell that to the single mom with a kid.

Fortunately laws such as this tend to fall on themselves and the people who create them.

People are required by law to attend school. Private education is not available to everyone. Even without monitary concerns.

any school receiving federal funding must adopt policies that allow teachers and school officials to conduct random, warrantless searches of every student, at any time, on the flimsiest of pretexts.

Amendment IV
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

People must attend, and because they are attending they must give up rights that the 4th amendment clearly grants.

I must be missing something.

Children are not adults. Schools are not public America.

I find it interesting you completely ignored the voucher answer which would solve many problems and give more options. it certainly would be much, much better for the single mom, but again unions and the DNC won't let their socialist system be changed without a bigger fight. Fortunately, that time is coming.

Why do you assume this only affects high schools?

There are numerous problems with voucher schools, not limited to the fact that it is impossible to enforce educational standards on them. You can mandate certain things be taught, but you cannot mandate the rest of the school's curriculum or scholastic environment. Under voucher systems you could have a KKK run school teaching KKK values along with math and english, and they'd be supported by taxpayer money.

Sorry, no.

Does the constitution not apply to people under the age of 18?

Complete red herring, Arlos. Standards are standards and competition and choice verifiably make things better. What you are saying is its ok for a child to be stuck in an ass school because it follows government standards, versus having options and not being socialistic. Choice wins.

Our schools suck, and is it not a shame that only wealthy people can afford to send their kids to better, private schools? Vouchers are smart and would open the field for more people.

Children have more and less rights, Gidan. Thats a long argument regarding constitutional law and minors. The issue is what can schools do and what rules should they obey?

It is possible to improve public schools without dismantling them entirely. You fail to take into account the fact that there ARE a great many well-performing public schools, that actually provide a good education. I went to public schools my entire life, save for 1 semester when I lived in Kansas, and came out of high school with 20-something credits of AP classes and a 1500 on the SAT. Would hardly indicate a "failed" school system here in California, eh?

School vouchers have repeatedly come up for vote here in California via the initiative ballot system, so we vote on them as statewide measures. Every single time it's come up for vote, it's been voted down by significant margins. The Voucher supporters have pretty much given up at this point, but they cannot even begin to claim they didn't get a fair chance, as we had no less than 3 or 4 voucher initiatives in a 5 year span. None even came close to getting even a simple majority.

this just boggles my mind. It seems you forgot to consider that this law ( if passed) would apply to ALL schools, not specific ones. This ltotally lacks the consideration of the subject. My statement stands.

I visited a christian school and I got the opportunity to read their science book. Every other page had the word Jesus on it. I think non biased government funded eduction is far better than what I saw there. That's not to say some public schools are failing.

I have friends that went to private schools in my area. I remember making fun of them because their text books were written in the 70s and were falling apart as opposed to the text books at my school which were always brand new.
