read the article first dipshit

During the testing, the machine will be used only as a backup screening measure. Passengers who fail the standard screening with a metal detector will be able to choose between the new device or a pat-down search.

"It's 100-per-cent voluntary, so if the passenger doesn't feel comfortable with it, the passenger doesn't have to go through it," TSA spokesman Nico Melendez said.

It is incredibly invasive. If the people would do their jobs in the first place it wouldn't have to get so extreme.

Airport security is already borderlining on too much. People can't say goodbye to their loved ones properly because of the possibilities of security breaches, potentially embarrassing items are put on display for the world to see, they're taking bottles of lotion and chap stick for crying out loud.

If someone wants to get past security, they will. The people they're trying to 'protect' us from have nothing to lose and therefore don't give a shit about security. They go in assuming they'll die, and honestly when there's no fear of death there isn't exactly anything that's going to stop them. There's no need to invade the lives of millions of innocent people .

I'd take the machine instead of having someone paw me (unless I ask for it, of course ;)).

Yea at the moment in time it is. Im not worried about that im worried about what if retards blind fear of terrorists leads to it being mandatory ? I have this fear in the back of my mind that freedom and technology cannot coexist. Call me any name you want but just keep watching as things keep goin down that slippery slope.

I'm not worried about it necessarily, I just think it's absolute overkill and unnecessary.

If it stops just 1 terrorist......would it be overkill or unnecessary then?

Imho if it deters, or catches just 1 person it would be well worth my time, tax payers dollars, and the incovenience.

One of the problems is: those machines will still be operated by TSA personnel. You know what TSA stands for, right? "Thousands Standing Around."

Those morons couldn't catch Mr. Magoo, much less hardened terrorists.

In one way I agrew with Spazz, in that this IS a slippery slope situation. Not from technology though, per ce, as for every advance in detection, there's likely to be a corresponding advance in how to hide things. This device is used as a backup to the metal detector, so if you want to avoid it, make sure your weapons don't register on the metal detector. How many hundreds of thousands of years did mesoamerican indians use obsidian knives to kill people? You don't think you couldn't make a modern version with a resin handle, and wear it in strapped to your calf?

No, it's a slippery slope for a much older question: how much (if any) of our freedoms and liberties are we willing to give up in the name of "security". Now, for me, I'm far more willing to accept draconian security on planes than anywhere else in life. First, air travel is not exactly a constitutionally protected activity, and there's the problem that there's so little margin for error there; you can't exactly stop and get off. A bomb that could take down a plane would barely be an inconvenience on a bus or train. Nevertheless, I think any new security increases need to be carefully considered and their impact assessed before they're adopted, regardless of the situation.

Arlos i agree with your TSA comment for sure. However, while right now they are used as a backup to metal detectors, who is to say they dont become a regular fixture to scan every person boarding a flight. I believe that that is where this "test" will eventually lead too. To me again, if it catches just 1 person either directly or indirectly, it will be well worth the hassle.

As for your knife analogy, you are right. By making this one a mandatory thing (not that im in favor of that necessarily) it would catch things that metal detectors would not.

I'd gladly walk through on of these things if I didn't have to half disrobe and unpack to go through security.

Someone needs to make a point and bring a knife made of something non-metallic through the scanner.

Hey maybe no one should be allowed to bring anything with them and they should have to disrobe entirely as soon as they enter the airport. If it stops just one syco it will be totally worth it.

I think it's incredibly naive to think that any of this crazy security is going to stop any potential terrorists. As I said before, these people that we're trying to stop are not afraid to die. They are not afraid to make any ultimate sacrifices. They will find a way for their purpose if they want to find a way. As much planning as they've put into the things they've done in the past, some little dinky scanner or extra security check in the airport will simply be a minor inconvenience for them at worst.

Why lock the door to your car or house? I mean a determined thief is going to get in regardless, locks are just a minor inconvenience to them. Locks only keep honest people honest, a thief that decides to rob you isn't concerned with breaking a window or popping a lock. I really don't know why anyone locks anything ;-).

Most people lock their doors as a preventive measure, and in reality to project a harder target that will at the very least discourage a potential thief and give them cause to look for an easier target. There are a lot less nations that are a target for terrorists then there are cars (and hopefully equally so less terrorists then thieves), we can ill afford to appear the easiest of targets. Our proximity to the center of Islamic terrorist operations provides a marginal buffer, but the reality is that there are cells in this hemisphere, and most likely cells within our own borders.

I don't honestly think that's comparable in all respect Lueyen, basically because you're comparing small time theft to years of thought out plans to murder people. I mean it isn't a matter of breaking in a car window or picking a lock - these people think out every possible precautionary measure knowing exactly what the consequences will be.

They're on completely different scales, really. If one car is harder to get through than the other, they'll just move on to the next car.. as far as terrorism goes, they have one car set in mind and it's us. They aren't going to switch countries.
