The thing is, Mindia, the Constitution protects *ALL* political speech, not just that which we like or happen to agree with, or that is "safe". For example, I don't think ANYTHING anyone does with the Flag can even begin to approach the level of disgusting putridity and filth that groups like the KKK or the Neo Nazis spew, and whil eI reject their message absolutely, I also believe they have the right to MAKE their message.

You have every right to feel whatever you want on a personal level about what that guy does. You have the right to go picket his business establishment if you so choose in protest of what he is doing. But neither you, nor especially the government, have any right to tell the man what he may or may not say, nor how he chooses to go about saying it, so long as he's not out there blowing people up or something to say it. Even if you hate what the guy did, what the police did was wrong, just as much as if they'd marched up on to someone's lawn and torn down a campaign sign, say. I'm sorry, but righteous moral indignation does not constitute an excuse for breaking the law, even if you agree with the sentiment behind what they did.

Remember too the guy in question here *IS* a veteran, and one who served actually in combat. You don't think he knows what the flag means to people? If he's choosing to do what he did still, that just shows the depth of his current feeling on the issue, given how strong a statement he's making. Also, he didn't burn the flag or damage it in any way. Just hunt it upside down.

Lastly, I must say that I disagree completely with your assessment on "real americans." The people out where you are support YOUR values, sure, but that doesn't make them necessarily "American" values, just what you think they should be. Living in the country doesn't make you better than people living in the cities, just different. Just as San Francisco is different from Detroit is different from Memphis. I am no less real for living in the Silicon valley than is someone who lives on a farm in a completely rural area, and I am no better, nor any worse than they are. Just different. See, I can accept the fact you have different beliefs than me, and think where you want to take the country is wrong and bad for us, as evidenced at least partially by the last 8 years. Why can you not respect that others' beliefs are just as strong to them as yours are to you, and they have just as much right to them as you do to yours?

There is a very long tradition of flying a flag upside down as a sign of distress and the local police had absolutely no right to remove it.
