HAHAHA Catholics get PWNED

Postby Narrock » Fri Jul 15, 2005 5:29 pm

JACKSON, Miss. - A Christian adoption agency that receives money from Choose Life license plate fees said it does not place children with Roman Catholic couples because their religion conflicts with the agency's "Statement of Faith."

Bethany Christian Services stated the policy in a letter to a Jackson couple this month, and another Mississippi couple said they were rejected for the same reason last year.

"It has been our understanding that Catholicism does not agree with our Statement of Faith," Bethany's state director Karen Stewart wrote. "Our practice to not accept applications from Catholics was an effort to be good stewards of an adoptive applicant's time, money and emotional energy."

Sandy and Robert Steadman, who learned of Bethany's decision in a July 8 letter, said their priest told them the faith statement did not conflict with Catholic teaching.

Loria Williams of nearby Ridgeland said she and her husband, Wes, had a similar experience when they started to pursue an adoption in September 2004.

"I can't believe an agency that's nationwide would act like this," Loria Williams said. "There was an agency who was Christian based but wasn't willing to help people across the board."

Bethany, based in Grand Rapids, Mich., has 75 offices in 30 states, including three in Mississippi. The offices are independently incorporated and are affiliated with various religions, spokesman John Van Valkenburg said from the agency headquarters. He couldn't say whether any were Catholic-affiliated.

He said the Jackson office is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church of America.

"They included this practice of not including Catholics," Van Valkenburg said Friday.

Stewart told the Jackson Clarion-Ledger that Bethany's board will review its policy, but she didn't specify which aspects will be addressed.

The agency's Web site says all Bethany staff and adoptive applicants personally agree with the faith statement, which describes belief in the Christian Church and the Scripture. It does not refer to any specific branches of Christianity.

"As the Savior, Jesus takes away the sins of the world," the statement says in part. "Jesus is the one in whom we are called to put our hope, our only hope for forgiveness of sin and for reconciliation with God and with one another."

Sandy Steadman said she was hurt and disappointed that Bethany received funds from the Choose Life car license plates. "I know of a lot of Catholics who get those tags," she said.

She added: "If it's OK to accept our money, it should be OK to open your home to us as a family."

Bethany is one of 24 adoption and pregnancy counseling centers in Mississippi that receives money from the sale of Choose Life tags, a special plate that motorists can obtain with an extra fee.

Of $244,000 generated by the sale of the tags in 2004, Bethany received $7,053, said Geraldine Gray, treasurer of Choose Life Mississippi, which distributes the money.

"It is troubling to me if they are discriminating based on only the Catholics," Gray said.

The Bethany spokesman, van Valkenburg, said the offices in Mississippi do not receive any public money, but that some offices in other states do, for example, because they are involved in foster care.

What is so owned about denying children a home based upon someone's faith?

So a single Mississippi branch of an adoption agency refuses to let a Catholic couple adopt so that's cause for glee for you, Mindia?

It's not like the couple won't go to another one, as there are dozens. Chances are the agents doing this will probably get fired from the national level, too, as the bad press will cost them tons in adoptions and PR.

Not a big surprise as it's Jackson, Miss, but really, wow, man. Whatever floats your boat.

Oh, yes... very much so. I just found a new charity to make donations to. See, what you don't understand Lyion, as well as your fellow thick-headed cultists, is that there are MANY people (Christians, and non-Christians alike) who KNOW that the RCC (Roman Catholic Cult) engages in practices that are counter to what God teaches us in the Bible... and those practices are not even supported in any of the books of the "Apocrypha."

If enough of these kinds of instances keep surfacing eventually the RCC will finally take a look at what they're doing, and hopefully they will be objective enough to make some very necessary adjustments. Until then, Catholics will continue to be the "outcast" Christian denomination.

I wonder if they deny adoption to athiest parents as well. Sad, really that the fact that these children who have no homes or families are being denied placement into a good home because of their religion. What would Jesus do?

What I don't understand is why anyone regardless of religious beliefs would be denied the ability to adopt a child who needs a home. Have you ever been in a foster home? Ever seen what it's like when there are 10 kids packed in there and they only get the basic essentials?

You're being very ignorant and I understand you're just trying to get a rise out of all the other nutjobs on the board who are holyrollers like yourself but honestly this type of shit hurts nobody but the children who really need a good home.

No, it's personally logical in his bigoted SDA influenced hatred of Catholicism.

Seriously, if 2 people are going to be good, caring parents and provide a good home for an infant (certainly not hard to be a better environment than a foster home), why should it matter ONE IOTA what religion they happen to follow, if indeed they follow any at all? What if the parents were Buddhist? How about Agnostic? How about Wiccan? How about Hindu? I'd say the catholic families have the grounds for one mother of a lawsuit, given that the organizations receive state money, and I hope they file one and force a complete policy change, and toss those responsible for such a policy out on their ass.

It saddens me, but does not surprise me, that Mindia is so hate-filled that he'd prefer to see an innocent infant suffer if in return it discomfits some catholics. Way to go Mindia, nice job of confirming everyone's opinion of you when you do stuff like this.

It really is scary that you would rather a child live in foster care then with 2 loving parents simply because they are catholic. So does your religion call for hatred of all who do not believe what you believe?

You know, I was never a big fan of catholicism as a whole, but if the whole SDA church is like Mindia, I think it's a shame that press focuses so much on Catholics and not on the mean-spirited hateful stubborn group that spits out ignorant jackasses like him.

Seriously, applauding someone for denying an innocent CHILD a home because you don't agree with a religion? Shame on you, I sure hope God is as merciful as people say, or you're in for a long, hot, miserable eternity. It'll serve you right, too.

It's people like Mindia that made the Crusades and Inquisitions possible....

Well, actually no since Mindia is so anti-catholics. Both the crusades and the inquisitions were launched with the blessing of the pope and the catholic church.

This is just another sophomoric attempt at getting posters agitated. I refuse to believe that even Mindia is low enough on the food chain to be serious with a thread like this.
