I also disagree with the "you smell like smoke all the time" thing. That's just a person's own problem if they can't smoke outside, wash their hands afterwards, and pop a breath mint.

I should quit because they cost too damn much. I'm not worried about the health problems, we all die, many of us painfully. However, it would save me... about 400 bucks a year if I quit.

The statistics are plain. Every day, approximately 4,500 Americans between the ages of 12 and 17 smoke for the first time. Half of them will smoke regularly from that point forward, which comes down to 800,000 new habitual smokers each year.

Is there nothing to be done? The easiest answer to that question is presumably the correct answer: Nothing. There is the blissful escapist factor: Not every smoker contracts emphysema or lung cancer. And there is the tireless diversionary exercise, drawing attention to Aunt Judie, who just died of lung cancer, had suffered from emphysema, and never had a cigarette in her life. Yes, and such data as these would not be withheld from you at the Mayo Clinic. The Mayo people aren't there to account for scientific anomalies. But a certain strength is imparted to people who expose themselves to the even-temperedness one finds there, the quiet confidence in the correctness of scientific lucidity, the corporate anxiety to show a resourceful concern for human health.

If you found yourself with emphysema, and you woke up emperor of the whole world, with absolute power in all matters of production and consumption, what would you do?

You want to know how to cure kids of smoking? Easy... Make phys. ed. a daily requirment and make it fucking HARD.

In Jr. High my gym teachers were both fucking super athletes and their idea of PE class was running stairs, 30 minute intense indian runs, circuit training from hell and on a light day a good 3 mile run.

You couldn't smoke and not want to die every single day when you were in that class.

Nowadays every fucking fatbody with bitch-tits can huff down an entire pack knowing that in PE class the most they might be required to do is play a rousing game of badmitten (sp?).

All these problems with American youth stem from our society becoming a bunch of pussies.

PE should involve running, street fighting, nunchuk techniques and powerlifting.

Girls on the other hand should be doing aerobics and learning how to cook and clean.

I researched this shit a while back. There are pretty elaborate anti-smoking add-campaigns funded by the corps' that actually support kids taking the shit up.

I didn't read all these posts but my comment goes like this:

Reason 1)
People that smoke and know it's bad want to do drugs and want be legal. You want to get high, whether you admit it or not, you're getting high. If pot were legal you'd be smokeing that.

Reason 2)
You're to immature to decide on your own so you must go with the "majority" (clic), and/or got hooked and don't have the self consitution to stop (e.g. you are too weak, yes too weak to stop).

Reason 3)
You like to "steal" time and money aware from your workplace / life. By smokeing you get an extra weeks vacation at work (roughly and of course this means your workplace allows you to smoke in or out of doors). Let alone the time you steal from yourself (e.g shortens life)

Reason 4)
You are "fighting the man", this is your Alamo, you feel you need to make a stand on something and even if you don't "like" smokeing this is your last stand. The man is any authority figure.

Reason 5)
You don't care about the harm it does and can "make up your own mind".

Folks smoke for one or more of the reasons above but I challenge ANY smoker to step completely outside of those reasons. You may have more (eg. 6, 7, 8) but I know for a FACT I can place ANY smoker in one of the 5 buckets.

Great so what's your point? I can make 5 broad reasons for people who smell their socks or run stop signs at night. I'm waiting for the second half of your posts.

I graduated 3 years ago and school as I knew it is very different from what is mostly portrayed on movies ect. It wasn't the geeks and straight A students who are thought as losers. Its the smokers and dead beats who aren't going anywhere. It was a cool thing to do well and stay away from stuff like cigs and pot.

Of course we partied every weekend and got drunk ect. But that stuff didn't make somone cool. It was doing well and being successful.

But that just may be northern Minnesota.

All the reasons I posted makes you less of a person IMHO :).

Lyion was asking if there is something that can be done.

Not offering solutions but fix those 5 reasons and in one way or another the solution would be found.

EDIT

I wanted to retract / correct one thing
I suppose reason 4 and 5 to me would be acceptable, I don't agree with the technique but the principal in my mind is sound

You're only fooling yourself if you think you enjoy smoking.

You MAY enjoy it, but the only reason you do is because you're addicted.

You're still killing yourself and others around you. You're still costing yourself thousands for something that is majorly fucking you up.

You lose in every fashion, and every smoker realizes this sooner or later. All of my friends want to quit but they're too pussy to do so.

Yes, because we all know what's best not only for ourselves, but everyone else as well. It's amazing how far people are willing to go to exert some kind of control over someone else. It must be an inherent flaw in man.

I'm not playing devil's advocate here, I truely feel anything beyond a sincere debate over the ills of smoking are unnecessary, unproductive, and go against the very foundation of this country.

I hate smokers

mostly because people who smoke affect everyone else around them

if smoking was something where you inhaled the smoke, and no one else was exposed to it I would give a shit

but the fact that smokers pollute the air around them for everyone else just drives me nuts
