Just because it was in a classroom doesnt mean it couldnt have happened. There have been plenty of stories about kids having sex, oral or otherwise, on schoolbuses.
Its also this was a K-12 or a K-8. We have one school around here that is Elementary+Middle School. While I dont imagine them teaching the older and younger kids together, maybe this was the in school suspension room. While I practically stayed in there my whole middle school time, there were different age groups in there and the teacher hardly ever stayed in the room.
This story seems plausible and is very sad.

No, this is not a problem. Kids at this age are almost always going to be ok on their own. Kids at this age baby sit already. They don't need supervision. Obviously you don't know jack about kids.

If you leave a group of kids alone, 9 times out of 10 they are going to start doing something they would not do with an adult present. I'm not saying that most kids will go to the extremes that these kids did, but they are going to do something wrong or not adult approved. If you don't believe this you haven't been around many kids. Also anyone letting a 11 year old kid babysit for them is an idiot. I can't believe you think an 11 year old doesn't need adult supervision, you must live in a world with some incredibly mature and well behaved kids, let me know where to find them.

I think a kid is totally capable to be left alone at the age of 11 / 12 . I know I was. The keyword is "alone". A 12 year by himself won't cause trouble, but infront of 10 other 12 year olds they are going to want to show off and misbehave with out any adult supervision.

And it's not like i'm alone on this one, the majority of people I know had babysitters up till 5th grade, and once they hit 6th grade ( middle school here) their parents trusted them to be on their own.

When Trystin was 9 I was letting him get off the school bus and wait at home alons for someone to get ehre, usually it was never more than 30 or 45 minutes. AS I said, he is 11 now, and his Dad lets him stay home all the time by himself. I don't agree with t, but he seems to think he is responsible enough.

Yeah Mark, but you said kids this age (11-13) baby sit already. There is no way in hell I, or many pther parents out there, would let an 11 year old baby sit young children. 16 is the youngest I would go because they can drive in case of emergency. 15 if they have their hardship license.

I baby sat a 10 year old. He was a great kid. Alone. When another mother wanted me to watch her kid, one of his friends, well that was the last time I would watch 2 young boys together. Fuck that noise. I couldnt get either to do what I needed them to do (clean up and go to bed, put their dishes up, stop running in the apartment)

Mark, do you speak fluent Mandarin? That's great for work opportunities in your future.

It seems to me that kids these days are much more immature though. When I was in elementary school I stayed home with my younger sister for about 2 hours until my older siblings got off school. But now, these kids are really immature, when we come home and my 14 year old nephew has been alone we look around to see wtf he has destroyed while we were gone. Kids these days ><

Its because, I think, we spoil or dont put enough responsibility on our kids like our parents did to us.

Not to side track shit too much but I agree with this. My wife and I often have a similar conversation as I have no problem with "spanking" my kids.

In school however there is no "adverse" cause/effect. Kids act bad, and no reaction outside of a note given to the parents.

Too many parents lean on school teachers for up-bringing. Placeing ethics along side with "learning" and a false expectation that ethics and morals will be "taught" in school.

I babysat my brother when I was 11, he's 10 years younger than me.

And Evermore, that school isn't in New Orleans, the AP reporter is in New Orleans. They're actually very close to Arkansas.

I don't see why spanking is necessary to discipline your kids. Why not just use reasoning, and take away the things they value as punishment. Do that, and they'll catch on, if you start beating them chances are they are going to WANT to push you somedays, just to see how far they can get away with it...

I agree and I don't agree with Burgy. I don't think physical discipline is necessary. On the otherhand, fuck reasoning with kids. The idea is to tell them straight out what to do and what is right and wrong so that when they grow up they develop reasoning through your lesson. The extent I'd go as far as reasoning would be to briefly explain myself after they have complyed. I also believe in negative reinforcement as my choice in how to raise a kid. I think punishment for bad things isn't good enough and I think rewarding a kid for taking out the garbage is stupid. I think kids should be punished for doing something wrong but have the punishment gradually lifted as they do better and better. Also, if you're gonna reward your kids for following through, do it rarely but in large scale.

My son will be 12 this summer and I have yet to find reason to hit him. Not that I am totally against it but I think about all the times I was spanked as a kid and I don't think I deserved any of them. The only thing I learned from getting whipped is that my dad was an asshole.
