I don't support jingoism and patriotism of any kind, either for my country or any other. It's a hollow empty gesture, so your analogy isn't going to work on me.

Have your party and bathe in the blood of your enemies for all I care. Obviously I think it's misguided and ultimately irresponsible, but meh, what do I know. Making a plea for reason is next to impossible on this message when indulgent and irresponsible behaviour is fun and easy.

The basis of reason is showing empathy and respect.

The celebratory nature of his death announcement doesn't sit right with me. I mean, people will react differently, but news outlets almost seem to be encouraging celebration.

I'd rather have it stated simply, directly, and objectively: "Osama bin Laden was shot and killed during a firefight with US Special Forces", and less like "WOOT WE KILLED HIM GUYS!".

Everyone is certainly free to react to the news however they wish, though. That's the sort of thing we're fighting for, right? I'd like to think so...

Taking bets on how long until the movie comes out.

Also, bets on when the CS:S custom Osama house raid map comes out.

No need to turn this into a me VS you thing. This is human behaviour I'm deriding, not American behaviour.

You feel justified in your violence, just as they feel justified in there’s. To me there is only one solution. No violence at all. They celebrate the deaths on 9-11. You celebrate the death of their leader. You derided their act, not only because of the heinousness of the act, but because of the savagery of cheering death. Now when the situation reversed you're happy to have your cake and eat it too.

Which is fine if you reduce this down to simply the death of a person. However, look at it as if we were cutting the head of Al Qaeda off.

I'd rather have it stated simply, directly, and objectively: "Osama bin Laden was shot and killed during a firefight with US Special Forces", and less like "WOOT WE KILLED HIM GUYS!".

Which is what valid news organizations are doing. I didn't see an office party at CNN last night on air. It was serious news analysis.

Everyone is certainly free to react to the news however they wish, though. That's the sort of thing we're fighting for, right? I'd like to think so...

A very small amount of people were out celebrating. However, many of those in DC or NY with family who were killed or whom had direct links to tragedies from 9/11 probably could care less what anyone else thinks, which is our whole point here.

I personally wouldn't go into the streets to celebrate anything, but that doesn't make it wrong.

The celebratory nature is not of his death, it's a congratulatory measure to our nation and the sacrifices that have been made in the name of the victims of the attacks. It's a celebration like any celebration amidst a victory. This is a victory for us, and we have a right to be proud of it and the people through whom it was accomplished. Bathing in his blood would be creepy, but that's absurdly hyperbolic and that's not what's happening here.

yeah i see both sides TBQH. only OBL's death could bring about the kind of peace and closure that so many bereaved needed for so long, so for them to finally feel that relief i can't blame them for being jubilant. beyond that, this act has not only removed a terrible person from taking further action against innocents, but has also silenced a very powerful voice from luring further potential insurgents into terroristic service. i think that if we can hold these reasons in our hearts, it is entirely acceptable to celebrate.

but for the broheims high-fiving on the streets - and especially the empty-headed drones on fbook - cheering for the bloodshed of our enemies is misguided at best. plus there is the very real likelihood that by killing him we have only created a martyr.

i met the announcement and the ensuing news coverage with quiet reflection, a sense of relief, and concern for the future.

those facebook posts make me want to vomit up my lunch and/or jump ship for canada. jesus christ.

also, i have learned (by overhearing conversations at work) that conservative nutbags all think that OBL was killed long ago and the government was just holding on to the information until obama's ratings tanked too far. or that they held on to the announcement until they were able to interrupt trump's TV show. or that they made the announcement in an effort to distract the public because someone was about to prove that obama's birth certificate is a fake (or some other similar nonsensical bullshit).

a guy across the aisle from me at work just said "well, after this, we're almost guaranteed another four years of osama." (no, that's not a typo--he made sure to check that the lady he was talking to caught his meaning.)

fucking america. honestly.

Fucking midwest, more accurately. But yeah, those facebook updates are utterly moronic.

I must admit, despite my liberal sensibilities, I too am glad he's dead. Not that I celebrate death, but just like I would be glad of any other mass murderer was caught or eliminated: now he is no longer capable of harming anyone else ever again. Sure, terrorism is far from done with, but it's symbol and one of their prime movers is now gone, and the world is at least marginally a safer place going forward.

Also, I think his death does give the families of 9/11 victims a sense of closure at this point, as the one who was ultimately responsible for their loved ones' deaths is now dead himself, at the hands of countrymen of the ones he had killed. Do I laud such sentiments? No, but I do understand them. Nor can I say for sure how I would feel right now if I HAD lost someone important to me on 9/11.

This is the point I think you guys are missing, that we're trying to point out

it's not

all of the celebration that' being covered via alJazeera is just going to create more anger and hatred towards the US

it's probably going to ramp up now

And the point your missing is that if we stayed quiet and in our houses they would still prolly do something because we killed him. The problem is the culture and the religion and no matter what we do or dont do they will feel provoked. Islam is the enemy of western values and dont give me that religion of peace shit. The entire mid east from iraq to isreal is a cesspit of of hatred and violence . In a perfect world we wouldnt have anything to do with any of those countries but since that isnt going to happen we are damned if we do and damned if we dont.

dude, we aren't fighting a hydra. we're fighting dirt merchants that go out of their way to attack our embassies and then bring the fight to our soil. obviously canadians wouldn't get it but it's a unifying thing for us to hear that this piece of human shit is dead

did anybody actually say they think "terrorism is over" because of this? i don't think so

i think the sickest part of this whole thing is how every conversation on Facebook, and even here, about this has devolved into critique about the manner in which someone is celebrating a momentous occasion that's been a long time coming. what a bunch of hippy bullshit

You're really going to equate cheering of the death of a mass murderer to the cheering of the deaths of peaceful civilians?

Yet another example of Canadians just not getting it. Of course you don't. You've never had to stand up for yourselves. That country down south of you has been doing it for you all of these years.

I am celebrating this victory - his death. It won't change our war on terror, but is a symbolic triumph over evil that we accomplished.

I honestly thought the guy was buried under a mountain years ago. This is so much more satisfying though =)
