Red Cross raised Guantanamo Koran abuse concerns

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The International Committee of the Red Cross told the Pentagon as early as 2002 detainees at Guantanamo Bay prison had reported U.S. personnel mishandled the Koran, Red Cross and U.S. officials said on Thursday.

Mishandled is rather subjective. To me someone letting the American flag touch the ground is mishandling it, however mishandling does not mean intent of abuse. The article does not go into detail about how it was mishandled and with what intent. It only states that the mishandling was similar to inadvertent action. I don't think it vindicates Newsweek in the least.

It's also worth noting this part of the article you linked.

"The U.S. government took corrective measures and those allegations have not resurfaced," Schorno said.

So we have a rather vague indication that in some way or another US personnel did or did not do something with the Koran that prisoners found offensive. Once the powers that be became aware of the problem it was corrected.

Oh and I had to laugh when I thought about the quote from the HRW.

"Around the world, the United States has been humiliating Muslim detainees by offending their religious beliefs,"

I'd be willing to bet that on some level, it would be against Muslim religious beliefs for infidels to detain Muslims. Perhaps we should let these people go so that we don't offend their religious convictions? Great idea there, then maybe some of them could help plan and or execute another terrorist act against America. Seriously have some people forgotten that while terrorist acts, and hatred of non Muslims is not the mainstream the simple fact remains that terrorist attacks in the last decade or so including the events on 9/11 were done in the name of Islam?

Furthermore these detainees are there becuase of involvment with this nations enemies in Afganistan, and thier reasons for being involved are a mixture between politics and religion. Yet our government asks the defenders of this country to walk on egg shells concerning thier religious convictions. The very same group of religious convictions that in part prompted them to attack us? The US personnel in Cuba have every reason for hatred and disrespect of the religious conviction of the detainees there, yet there has been no reports of disrespect or mishandling since 2003 when the problem was brought to our governments attention? It sure sounds to me like we are being very compasionate and respectful... when really we have a lot of reasons not to.

That's got to be some pretty impressive flushing power in that bowl if you can get the entire Terrorist's Handbook down it without having to call a plumber. Either that or they have access to the world's largest plunger!

Funny thing is... there are over a BILLION Muslims around the world. Only a "handfull" are fanatic enough to commit terrorism. All religions have zealots that take their faith a little far. How many abortion doctors have been killed by Christian zealots? Yet, we don't label the Bible as a "Terrorist's Handbook," now do we?

So, exactly how many abortion doctors have been murdered by "Christian zealots"? Less than five is my guess. 5 versus 5,000 is hardly battle-hardened ground to make your stand.

Besides, while there may very well be over a "BILLON" Muslims, roughly half of those Muslims - the female half - suffer from "domestic terrorism" right at home courtesy of the other half. The male half.

And from what source do these male Muslim "domestic terrorists" take their insidious cues from? None other than the Koran/Quron/Terrorist Handbook!

Or perhaps you consider rape, beatings, imprisonment or murder of female relatives(and sometimes strangers) for just speaking to a non-relative males(GASP!) to be fair and just punishment? And that's only the tip of the iceberg of sinful deeds females can be punished for in the Muslim world. Funny how the same standards are rarely applied male Muslims.
