Schools still have gifted programs. My son is in one now in Florida. The people doing all the complaining are the folks that didn't make the cut when they were younger. If any of you had attended the gifted programs, you wouldn't think so poorly on at least a few of your school years.

Yes, my teachers made significantly less than the ones in public school. In addition to what Zeek said, most of my teachers were very young (early 20s-mid 30s) and had an incredible fervor for their work, so the students win as well.

This brings up another good point. What makes a good teacher? The public system is under the foot of unions which require significant certification in an effort to protect their membership from overcrowding and create a guise of qualification. Many people who would be great teachers are discouraged from teaching due to the burdens of certification.

The teachers I had in my private schools made less then the lowest paid tech support people in the ISP I work for now. The advantages they have were that their housing, food and utilities were paid for by the school as long as they lived on campus. The only thing they had to pay for was Cable TV if they wanted to have it.

The majority of my teachers were 22 - 28, most fresh out of college. The turnover rate of teachers was about 70% from year to year. Most of them used it as a way to have a job for 1 or 2 years after college while they worked on starting their career.

Now my actual effort at a response is this: AP classes and gifted classes are both USELESS.

The smartest thing a smart kid can do is get in a program that lets them ditch highschool and go straight to college.

I don't put much faith in college either but it is a hell of a lot better than public school. If they can get a year or two jump on their college education instead of wasting time in highschool they will be way ahead of their peers.

With the rate of social development these days I don't see why more kids don't bail on highschool and go to college at age 16.

I think it's humorous when original posters retort to some critique with "You didn't understand my post, reading comprehension is your friend!?@#!" and throw insults in about intelligence for good measure. It's funny, because a sure sign of intelligence is the ability to communicate your point with little or no confusion.
Even when posting during drunken rampages, Ralph's posts are crystal clear as well as brutal and non-pc. He is the outspoken little devil many of us have on our shoulders whispering things we usually do not act on or say out loud. Plus he's wildly entertaining.
