Hamas

Postby Sorina S » Fri Jan 27, 2006 5:10 pm

Oh I know this has gotta be makin some of you guys crazy. Who woulda thunk it, with all our money going into the Fatah coffers for years and years that when a fair general election was held, Hamas would win.

I gotta give GW his due though, in his press confrenece Thursday he said pretty clearly that when a government is corrupt, when a government fails the people, replace it. I'm sure Conde has a few more grey hairs but I think Bush is taking this in stride.

I dunno if this will be the start of something good, or something terribly bad...but it's gonna start something. That you can take to the bank.

Your grasp of the obvious is a credit to our public school system.

Considering I consider public schools the educational dredge of society I think my comment was apropos.

Quite true Martrae. And when you consider that everyone here most likely went to a public school, well you can see how mastering the obvious is both appropriate and advantageous. One can only hope that someone among us, perhaps someone who went to a private school, could speak to the intention of the original post.

We can only hope.

Well, the PLO were held in less esteem in the 80s than Hamas is held now. If they can transform, so can Hamas. Hamas despite being confrontational recently, also helped the Palestianians out more in the poor and downtrodden areas.

It'll be interesting how this plays out. Moreso if Netanyahu gets re elected.

Look, I have heard of no objections to the way the elections were held. But what you have to remember is that Hamas' principals aren't the same as the Palestinian people. The election was a result of local frustration. Polls show support of a 2-state system among the Palestinians at over 70%. This is not the case with Hamas. I heard an interview with the spokesperson of Hamas last night. He tried to skirt around the question, wouldn't answer what their stance was on recognizing Isreal, but it was obvious that they don't.

Ganzo you contest the fairness of the elections? On what grounds Sir? My gawd we pumped millions into Fatah to garuntee them a win, hahaha and they fucking blew it. Hamas didn't win by cheat or subversion. They won by sheer will of the public, they won democratically, and don't that just bite your ass?

Hamas didn't even want to win, they wanted a coalition with Fatah. Hamas wanter power over the social ministries and to let Fatah continue with the political. You know I can't get over the image of GW's eyes outta my head when he talked about the election Thursday morning. He knew, we all knew. It was fair, it was overwhelming...the people of Palestine have spoken. Balls in our court now I belive.

Bush made his point to em clearly. They need to back off their platform concerning Israel's right to exist. But he made other points subtley, he knows Fatah was a rip off, a money pit. He knows Hamas has done real things, in education, medical relief, feeding the hungry...and you know who supports Hamas don't you?

There's a golden oppourtunity here I think. I hope they don't bog it down.

What is Bush going to do? An election was held and the side he root for lost. Nothing he can do about it. He has been pushing for democracy in the Middle East and that's what he got.

Indeed Phleg, but what he does now is very important. If he alienates the new government there's gonna be a world of shit over there. Hamas has been in a cease fire with Israel for the past year, and you know how shaky that is on both sides.

I think there's an oppourtunity for a true settlement here. Hamas has never been interested in making itself rich. Their agenda is pretty clear, they want the Israelies to stop oppressing their people. They want fair borders, back to the '67 ones. But I think more than hat, they want to help the Palestinian people move forward. In education, healthcare, nutrition, infrastucture...

Yes Hamas are the folks that send in guys with bombs strapped to their chests to blow up busses. I think they know that's unacceptable. I don't think they would have joined the democratic process if they didn't want alternatives.
