Consumer Reports top ten cars:

Postby Phlegm » Thu Mar 02, 2006 8:30 am

All from Japanese carmakers. From CNN:

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) - Japanese carmakers -- or, more specifically, Honda followed by Toyota and Subaru -- took all ten spots in this year's Consumer Reports magazine top picks.

No American or European nameplates are represented in this year's list, which is published in the April issue of Consumer Reports magazine.

The lone American model on last year's list, the Ford Focus, was replaced this year by the new, redesigned Honda Civic

Of the five Honda vehicles on Consumer Reports' Top Picks, four are manufactured in the U.S. The remaining vehicle, the Honda Ridgeline, was designed and engineered in the U.S. but is built in Canada.

Of the five other vehicles in the list, two are Toyotas, two are Subarus and one is from Nissan's Infiniti luxury division. Those remaining five are all are produced in Japan.

Consumer Reports buys vehicles anonymously for its test fleet through ordinary retail dealerships and tests them at a specially built facility in Connecticut. Among the tests performed are acceleration, handling, braking, ride quality and visibility.

In addition to track tests, test engineers also drive the vehicles in ordinary day-to-day situations.

To gauge reliability, the magazine surveys subscribers to both the magazine and its related Web site. Each respondent can supply data on up to two vehicles and the magazine received survey data on about a million individual vehicles this year, Consumer Reports said.

In order to be considered for a Top Pick a vehicle must have at least average predicted reliability, based on survey results, and good scores in crash tests by the government and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

That's interesting because the news report I heard this morning stated that Ford took one spot on the list while the Japanese took the other 9.

What's interesting about the article is that of the five hondas on the lists, four are made in the US while the other one was designed and engineered in the US and built in Canada.

Consumer Reports has always had a if it ain't from japan, it sucks mentality.

An American car could cure cancer, handle like Mila, and run on water and it still would not rank higher than the Accord. Take it with a grain of salt.

The rankings are based on an average of issues per vehicle. They are also very subjective.

So you're saying you'd rank domestics above their choices?

No, I'm saying take their choices with a grain of salt, as they are a proven biased entity. I'm biased, also, so take my posts about them, likewise, with a modicum of care!

I was more asking for your opinion. I don't even think the most hardcore domestic guys would say the stuff they're putting out now is better...

I think certain American cars are better. The Cadillac destroys the Lexus or Infiniti right now in pretty much every category. The Fullsize Japanese trucks are garbage compared to Ford and Chevy.

The low end GM and Ford stuff still are not as good as they need to be to compete with Honda and Toyota. The japanese minivans also own their American counterparts three ways to sunday. The middle tier stuff is very close, and where I have a problem with CR, and their very biased editorializing. I actually think some American cars are better in that realm.

Lyion didn't you get a Honda Minivan?

And I disagree, I test drove an Escalade and my compared it against my GX470 and the Lexus felt smoother, handled better and all in all was just way more comfortable than the Escalade. Maybe that's my cheapness talking, but that's just my 2 cents. The Escalade I will say definately had more balls than the GX470, but the GX470 feels way nicer.
