THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, India (AFP) - An Indian movie director said he hopes to persuade Paris Hilton to play the role of Nobel laureate and prospective Catholic Saint, Mother Teresa, in an upcoming film.

"Her features resemble Mother Teresa," director T. Rajeevnath told AFP from the southwestern coastal state of Kerala.

The filmmaker said Hilton is on his shortlist after a computer-generated image showed a close facial match between the hotel heiress and the Albanian-born nun.

Mother Teresa, who died in 1997, worked among the poor in the teeming slums of Kolkata, formerly Calcutta, with the Missionaries of Charity. She was beatified by Pope John Paul in 2003, a significant step on the road to sainthood in the Catholic church.

"A meeting with Paris Hilton is scheduled for the end of April," Rajeevnath said.

The 54-year-old director is well-known in India for his Malayalam-language films, including "Janani" (Mother) -- the story of seven nuns who care for an abandoned baby, which won a national award.

Hilton's prior movie experience includes appearing in a home-made sex video made by a former boyfriend that appeared on the Internet, and parts in several Hollywood B-films.

The blond socialite, who is often the focus of US celebrity gossip columns, also starred in the US reality television show "The Simple Life".

What a dumbass, just because her facial features resembles MT he wants to cast her? Since when do actors ever look like the charectors they portray? Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas excluded of course.

Or in Paris' case, she can pretend to act.

My favorite part:

But her ideals always seemed to take a back seat around her friends, the dictators. In 1975, Indira Ghandi imposed martial law in India. During the two year "state of emergency" she suspended the constitution, imposed censorship on the news media, and arrested her political enemies. Indira's son Sanjay spearheaded an effort in population control for the poor, wherein they were rounded up and forcibly sterilized. Despite her lifelong opposition to contraception and presumptive support for human rights, Mother Teresa chose to embrace the new order and issued a public statement lauding the government's efforts.

Her "lauding"

Mother Teresa wrote:People are happier. There are more jobs. There are no strikes.

First of all although these words are in praise of the situation, I think it's a stretch to say they were glorifying. Of the positive results she sighted none of them can really be argued to be the result of forced sterilization. I doubt people became happier as a result of forced sterilization. More jobs in the short term, especially considering that if there were any contribution to the effect it would be to increase the population of the workforce... making jobs seem MORE scarce. No strikes.. People with children are less likely to go on strike... they have more mouths to feed.. again not a situation that likely was furthered by forced sterilization, to the contrary it would tend to hamper these things. And really the comment was praise about the results, not endorsement of the methods taken to bring the situations about.

As a matter of fact, the article in an effort to drive it's charge of hypocrisy home neglects to mention that Mother Teresa was opposed to the sterilization program, and even chastised Indira Gandi during a meeting with her. The Prime Minister described her meeting with Mother Teresa as a "humbling" experience.

Really though criticisms that were crafted by misrepresentation of facts are probably the least interesting aspects of this article. I believe the motivation for these lies in a much deeper root.

I think the author is so ideologically polar to Mother Teresa that they can not comprehend in the least her mindset. I'd even go so far as to guess that the author is just as uncompromising in his or her views as Mother Teresa was of her own. It is ironic to me that such vehemence arises in someone who seems to be so similar in conviction even if so diametrically opposite in thought.
