Pluto no longer a planet!

We are down to 8 now. :(

Actually going to increase the planets to 12 not decrease to 8. The 4 added are Plutons or smaller planets than mercury. /sigh. Does it really fucking matter?

They decided to downgrade Pluto to dwarf planet status instead of a full-fledged planet. They aren't adding any more planets but are categorizing 2 other space objects as dwarf planets as well.

And, yes, it matters.....

whatever you call a planet is a planet..

this nerd war of clearly defining what a planet is comes across as very silly

You may not consider it to be an important decision, however in the long run for people who are in the field; it can be a very important distinction.

They are discussing adding up to 3 more planets(pluton planets btw or dwarf planet if you want to use that term) and downgrading pluto to a dwarf planet or Pluton as i said. I said 4 added....but i meant 3 added and then adding pluto to the list of Plutons. Definition of a pluton is a PLANET that is smaller than Mercury. So no we are not going down to 8 planets we could very well get some more. This is all in talk right now.

And when i said does it really matter...should have been more clear on that. Im very interested in astronomy etc etc. What i meant when i said "does it really matter" is the oncoming arguments over plutons and "regular planets" I just was typing to fast and didnt type what i was thinking.

Downgrading Pluto does not mean we are losing a planet. So still 9 atm...although 1 is now a dwarf planet.

This means that a lot of printed materials will get new editions. Lots more money for authors and publishers.

I only meant that they announced the changes today. They were considering doing it the way you first said but then did a big switcheroo. :)

Yep and most likely they will probably do another switcheroo

At least i think they should. This next 10 years should be pretty interesting in space discoveries. I love reading about the stuff

I'm definitely looking forward to the arrival of the probe we've got currently heading towards Pluto. We know almost nothing about the place right now; no current telescope can get a picture of it other than a fuzzy blob. Definitely VERY exciting.

July, 2015.

Unfortunately, Pluto's too small to be able to slow the probe down much, so it's only going to get 1 relatively quick flyby. Still, they're gonna turn the cameras on and start recording data in like February of that year, and keep them going til November or December.

Hey Mart i owe you an appology. The article that is posted on this thread i thought was several days old, and one of the many i had already read on the subject. Didnt realize this was from today, and the council actually voted it as a non planet. I didnt think that council was meeting till later this month.

I appologize for that

There's little purple people on the backside of Pluto. They're gonna freak when they see our probe go whizzing by in the night sky. They're gonna point up in the sky and go, "DFL:JK(YJKDH***000000:11 FF EEkjsdkj!!!"
