NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (AP) -- Five fifth-grade students face criminal charges after authorities said four of them had sex in front of other students in an unsupervised classroom and kept a classmate posted as a lookout for teachers.

The students were arrested Tuesday at the Spearsville school in rural north Louisiana, authorities said. Two 11-year-old girls, a 12-year-old boy and a 13-year old boy were charged with obscenity, a felony. An 11-year-old boy, the alleged lookout, was charged with being an accessory.

"After 44 years of doing this work, nothing shocks me anymore," said Union Parish Sheriff Bob Buckley. "But this comes pretty close."

Authorities said the incident happened March 27 at the school, which houses students from kindergarten through 12th grade. A high school teacher normally watches the fifth-grade class at the time, but went to an assembly for older students and the class was inadvertently left unattended, Buckley said. The class, which had around 10 other students, was alone for about 15 minutes, he said.

"When no teacher showed up, the four began to have sex in the classroom with the other elementary students in the classroom with them," he said.

It took a day for authorities to find out about the incident. A student who had been in the class told a high school student about it the next day, Buckley said. The student told a teacher, and school officials notified the sheriff's office. Detectives began questioning students Thursday.

School officials did not return calls seeking comment.

The students, who were not identified because of their age, were released to their parents after their arrests, Buckley said. They will next be arraigned in juvenile court.

A message seeking comment from the district attorney was not immediately returned.

Buckley said it was unclear what penalties the children could face.

Also I notice one of the fifth graders was 13 years old? What's with that? I think I was 14 when I started 9th grade.

holy shit! I know a 12 year old who got pregnant. My son is 11...freaky. I guarantee mental problems from this...it's a kind of desensitization. by the time those kids are 30 they will be phased by nothing and probaby unable to feel certain emotions.

I always thought it was 5th grade = 10 years old, 6th grade = 11, 7th = 12, 8th = 13, and you start high school at 14. Well, some people turned 14 during their first year of high school, etc. but that is, as far as I know, the normal breakdown.

NONE of those kids were 10, they were all 11, 12 and 13, how can they say they were fifth graders? I guess hearing "fifth graders having sex" is more shocking than "8th grader has sex", so that's why they used that tagline.

How often are kids held back these days, really? It's pretty rare, and to have 4 of them in 1 class, one of which at least would've been held back not once, not twice, but THREE times? That strains the bounds of credulity to even consider.

You think it's more likely that the AP reported that they were Fifth graders when in fact they weren't? My bet is that they were Fifth graders who were either held back or started late.

Most kids are 6 years old going into first grade and will turn 7.

I turned 11 in 5th grade because my birthday is in February. It all depends on when your birthday falls. Also here at least it's becoming more and more popular to not put kids in Kindergarten until later if there birthday doesn't fall early in the year, so for instance you often have kids turning 6 at the start of Kindergarten or in the fall. That said, I bet it was some sort of combination class. I don't know much about rural northern LA though so who knows, but maybe it's like a hillbilly sort of place? That would account for the kids of differing ages in one class.

While I agree that the teacher shouldn't have left the kids unsupervised, I can't imagine it was in anyone's wildest dreams that the kids would start having sex with no one around. I mean... get rowdy, yeah. Destroy the classroom.. yeah. Start having sex?? NEVER would have crossed my mind.

the problem is the teacher left a bunch of kids without any kind of supervision, that is a problem. Ya I'm sure they didn't expect the kids to do this, but anybody who's been around kids will tell you leaving them alone is just a bad idea.

I predict this story is false. A 10+ something kid is telling it and we are to believe these other kids got naked and penetrated each other, sorry but I'm not buying this one until there is some other tid-bit or detail from a reputable source.

The other thing is, when you hear 5th grader, you THINK 10 year old. There's a big big difference between a situation of "Hey, 10 year olds were fucking" and "Hey, a 13 year old and a 12 year old had sex". Sure, they're still too young, but there's big changes that happen between 10 and 12.

Well...considering the upheaval in New Orleans it wouldn't surprise me if some kids were out of school/held back for a year or two. When was the last time you saw a classroom of 15 kids?

As for the sex games in front of the other kids....that actually doesn't surprise me and I don't think it's a lie. It being in a classroom is a bit odd, though.

Want to talk about large class sizes though, wait til they get the University level and get a lecture with 500 other kids.
