The post office is pretty greedy, they have rate changes once every couple of years. UPS and Fedex has theirs on the off years so every year we get hit with some kind of rate change.

USPS is also instituting shape based pricing, which throws the shape of a mail piece into the pricing equation. Before postal shipping cost was determined by weight, now it is determined by weight, height, length and thickness.

Well, one reason the post office raises rates is because they're the only government agency that is entirely self-sufficient. They get not a dime of tax money, they get every penny of their operating costs from postal rates. So, as costs go up, they kinda don't have a choice.

Not only that, up to four years ago, they estimated that they were losing 250 million dollars a year in meter fraud. So they implemented a plan to phase out all mechanical meters, which at the time were the only meters in the field.

As a result, they made all postage meter manufacturers design "crack proof" digital meters that print digital information based indicias that the USPS has to personally "ok" before we can release it to the public.

You can imagine the amount of dropped jaws when that little memo came out.
