US raid into Syria

Postby Ganzo » Mon Oct 27, 2008 3:12 pm

So Russian news TV showing Syrian village decimated by 4 us Apache helicopters and 10ish spec forces on ground, bunch of dead civilians, destroyed homes. This is after Syria decides to talk to Russia about hosting Russian military base. Wonder how long till major incursion into Syria, and Russia using this same way US did Georgia.

I think you are missing a point that Syria is an independent country that is not at war with US. Syria had not attacked US or it's civilians anywhere in the world. We went inside their territory on supposed terrorist hunt and killed bunch of civilians in their homes in the middle of the night.

      http://www.iht.com/articles/2008/10/28/africa/28syria.php

WASHINGTON: A raid into Syria on Sunday was carried out by American Special Operations forces who killed an Iraqi militant responsible for running weapons, money and foreign fighters across the border into Iraq, American officials said Monday.

The helicopter-borne attack into Syria was by far the boldest by American commandos in the five years since the United States invaded Iraq and began to condemn Syria's role in stoking the Iraqi insurgency.

The timing was startling, not least because American officials praised Syria in recent months for its efforts to halt traffic across the border.

But in justifying the attack, American officials said the Bush administration was determined to operate under an expansive definition of self-defense that provided a rationale for strikes on militant targets in sovereign nations without those countries' consent.

Together with a similar American commando raid into Pakistan more than seven weeks ago, the operation on Sunday appeared to reflect an intensifying effort by the Bush administration to find a way during its waning months to attack militants even beyond the borders of Iraq and Afghanistan, where the United States is at war.

Administration officials declined to say whether the emerging application of self-defense could lead to strikes against camps inside Iran that have been used to train Shiite "special groups" that have fought with the American military and Iraqi security forces.

American officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the secrecy of the raid said the mission had been mounted rapidly over the weekend on orders from the Central Intelligence Agency when the location of the man suspected of leading an insurgent cell, an Iraqi known as Abu Ghadiya, was confirmed. About two dozen American commandos in specially equipped Black Hawk helicopters swooped into the village of Sukkariyah, near the Iraqi border, just before 5 p.m., and fought a brief gun battle with several militants, including Abu Ghadiya, the officials said.

It was unclear whether Abu Ghadiya died near his tent on the battlefield or after he was taken into American custody, one senior American official said.

One United States official described Abu Ghadiya as Al Qaeda in Mesopotamia's "most prominent" smuggler of foreign operatives crossing the Syrian border into Iraq, and in February the Treasury Department named him as one of four major figures in that group living in Syria.

The bolded part: I keep getting the mental image of a group of soldiers armed to the teeth holding up a "warrant" showing a big Bush seal-of-approval with the words PATRIOT ACT on it.

if there are people we don't like or agree with....

WE SHOULD BE ABLE TO JUST FUCKING GO ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD AND FUCKING KILL THE FUCKING FUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

that makes complete sense..... i mean, so what if the country has a border that is recognized by the rest ofthe world, so what if they have not launched a direct attack on us, so what if we just killed a bunch of people who weren't even involved WHO GIVES A FUCK???? THEY AREN'T AMERICANS AND THEY SEND DRUGS HERE AND IT'S A SHITBAG OF A COUNTRY???? I mean if drug dealers/producers lived in my neigborhood i would HOPE that someone would bomb the fuck out of my block and i would give my life for that shit... you know?

do people have any clue why the majority of the world hates the USofA? do people not get that we could find justification to invade any country and that the american public becomes more and more docile and bovine-esque in its swallowing whole of actions like this one?

No, but what we should not do is write ourselves a permission slip saying "AMERICA! FUCK YEAH!" and go in with guns blazing killing innocents left and right in order to stop them.
Ganzo already said it - there are terrorists hiding in many other places, including allied nations. We don't go over there doing this. Syria should be no different.

Also, look at it this way: if we had neo-nazi terrorists here in the USA training and supplying bombs and shit so as to hit some other country... let's say Russia, or worse, China... would you be totally cool if they came into your town and shot dead your family because they "got in the way" and then told the world "WE CAN BECAUSE WE HAVE THE RIGHT TO DO WHATEVER THE FUCK WE PLEASE" without so much as a stutter?
This country would be in an absolute uproar of seething, froth-mouthed citizens screaming to go to war, we'd rally allies to go with us, they'd rally allies to help them, and we all end up crispy fried peking goulash.

Back the fucking bus up here. Since when did you all start using Hollywood films as the backbone of your arguments? I personally know people stationed in Kuwait, Iraqi, and Afghanistan in "Liaison" roles and I can assure you that NOTHING gets done 100% by our forces alone. We don't go blindly into a foreign country guns blazing. How do you think we got the intelligence on the camp that was housing this guy?

Let me make this crystal clear. Our armed forces are in CONSTANT contact with EVERY country's armed forces that we have or MAY have operations in. That includes BLACK OPS! The "black" means it is a secret to those outside of the military. Granted, we don't share the entire scope or details of the operations with other countries but I am 99.95% sure that Syrian defense ministers KNEW we were going in their country to fuck up this guys operation. And I wouldn't be surprised that Syrian special forces had a part in the raid.

Who the fuck said anything about "using Hollywood films as the backbone" of any argument?
Use your head and don't pick out an obvious colorful exaggeration used to make a point as a preface to start an argument. That's just stupid.

        The issue is this:
But in justifying the attack, American officials said the Bush administration was determined to operate under an expansive definition of self-defense that provided a rationale for strikes on militant targets in sovereign nations without those countries' consent.

Now, as for the expertly shared knowledge regarding our military communications: I think it's common knowledge that we communicate with every country we do operations in. No one is disputing that.
But, this has exactly what to do with the point? Nothing.

Naturally we were in communication with Syria before this happened. Did they have troops there? Not that's been reported, but then that would be typical.
The problem is that Syria could have very well said "No, you will not bring US forces over the border. We will take care of it and ask for assistance if needed" and the US is basically saying "We weren't asking for your permission. See you at O-four hundred!"
"Expansive definition" ... coming from the Bush Administration, that is just way too dangerous.

No, the U.K. should have done something about it a long time ago. Their government also doesn't hold strong ties to known terrorist groups. Financially or politically...

The U.K. isn't the same as Syria. That's not a good analogy.

That wasn't me being gung ho about it. That was me taking into account Syria's known relations to terrorism. It is very clear they know they are there and plan to do nothing about it.

Sometimes "proper" channels aren't a viable means of getting through to what needs to be done. But, like Eziekial said, their government knew we were coming almost assuredly anyways.
