Your vote is wasted so it makes no difference 100% waste, well outside the fact that if your "out of the norm" candidates don't get at least, what is it, 28k or 280k votes or something, your party goes bye bye for good.

I'll see if I can find the source for this, they just had it on NPR and I don't think NPR is trying to scare anyone into anything.
How do you think those names get on the ballot? It isn't cheap and if you can't maintain it, you don't get back on until you recreate it. You will fall off the ballot and be forced to recreate if you do not get a set number or more votes. That said, even if the number was 280k, I'll concede that isn't a hard number to reach.
