Oral Sex Safe and Not Really Sex, Say U.S. Teens
Apr 4, 8:34 AM (ET)

CHICAGO (Reuters) - One in five U.S. teenagers say they have engaged in oral sex, an activity that some adolescents view as not sex at all and certainly less risky than intercourse, a report released Monday said.

The survey of 580 children with a mean age of 14-1/2 found 20 percent said they had engaged in oral sex, compared to 14 percent who said they had engaged in sexual intercourse.

In addition, one-third of the multi-ethnic 9th graders surveyed said they intended to have oral sex within the next six months and nearly one-fourth planned to have intercourse during the period. It was more common for boys to have performed oral sex on girls than vice versa, the report said.

Previous studies and numerous campaigns aimed at deterring teenaged sex have focused on intercourse, but as many as half of adolescents experience oral sex first, the report said.

The risk of transmitting infections, including HIV, is significantly less with oral sex than with intercourse but is likely underestimated by teenagers, said the report in the journal Pediatrics.

Youngsters who engage in oral sex rarely used condoms or dental dams, even though herpes, hepatitis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis as well as the virus that causes AIDS can all be transmitted orally, it added.

"Given the suggestion that adolescents do not view oral sex as sex and see oral sex as a way of preserving their virginity while still gaining intimacy and sexual pleasure, they are likely to interpret sexual health messages as referring to vaginal sex," wrote lead author Bonnie Halpern-Felsher, a pediatrician at the University of California, San Francisco.

"Adolescents also believed that oral sex is more acceptable than vaginal sex for adolescents their own age in both dating and non-dating situations, oral sex is less of a threat to their values and beliefs, and more of their peers will have oral sex than vaginal sex in the near future," she wrote.

I knew a girl once, that declared she was a virgin when she got married. Which was technically true. She had never had a penis inserted into her vagina. She had done everything else but that.

I've added my opinion to this via bold. I doubt that much has changed in the last 20-30 years save more worthless surveys with little factual good information.

In fact, I'd guess there is less sexual activity per child now than there was in the early 70s.

I guess I view oral sex as a sexual act, but not "sex" per say, I consider "sex" to be synonymous with intercourse. Not to say that I condone these children engaging in sexual acts, I still think its careless and risky behavior.

IMO it's was him going on and on about oral sex not being sex, which is exactly what the kid's picked up on.

The mean age was 14 1/2. The Clinton shit happened in 98? That would mean these kids were 7-8? I doubt they were picking up on the nuanced language of what is and isn't sex. However, blaming him is easier than say, blaming shitting parenting and lack of proper education on the subject.

That is a killer legacy. If the world needs anything, its more oral sex.

Kudos.

Bush Legacy: Dead Iraqis.

Clinton Legacy: Blow Jobs for all.

Seems like a no brainer.

Actually, that just means the ideology was imbedded in their heads when their parents watched the news. There were whole shows devoted to the debate on whether oral sex was sex, you can't tell me that none of that stuck in the subconscious.

Subconsciously planted idea that oral isn't really sex. In these kids minds they are practicing personal responsibility and abstinance.

Side question for everyone and anyone, what grade(s) did your schools cover sex education? What was covered in it? What did your parents have to say about sex to you? At what age(s)?

Never was talked to about sex with my parents. They taught sex ed in 8th and again in your health class in high school, whatever grade you took it at.
What was covered was STD's pregnancy and proper protection from both.

The one in 8th was great. I dont remember what was said, but it was taught by a Christian minister so there were a couple "....or you'll go to HELLLLLL" thrown in there for good measure. It was magic.

Sex ed was 10th grade I think. The instructor was some red faced perv who made all the girls sit in the front of the classroom so he could look up their skits.

Dad and I where outside getting ready to bar-b-que and I was 13 or so when he broached the subject. The conversation went like this:

Dad: "Did, I tell you about the birds and the bees yet?"
Me: "No, but don't worry about it, I've figured it out already."
Dad: "Ok. Always wear a rubber."
Me: "Yup. Is the bar-b-que ready?"
Dad: "Yeah, go grab those steaks."

Sage advice to this very day.

Lolz.

My dad showed me an extension cord when I was 8. He said this is the male, and plugged it into the wall. That's the female. The end.

P.S. Why does anyone take surveys from teenagers seriously. Didn't you, me, and everyone else just answer however we felt that given day just to jerk them around? I did.

yah I call bullshit too... Who does these idiotic surveys anyways? What do they set up hidden cameras in little boys bedrooms to figure out this information... If they actually asked 14 year old boys these questions to get the information for this survey I guarantee it was worthless.. If you asked me at 14 how many bitches I porked I would have told you 7.... AT ONCE.

... Hmmm after putting some thought to this I think the rise is probably caused by Michael Jackson.... I'm pretty sure quite a few 14 year old boys probably gave him head. That would mean they're not virgins anymore I guess.

i was taught the basics of sex ed in 8th grade health class, a little more indepth in the 10th grade. i seem to recall a very brief video that boys and girls had to get seperated to watch sometime in elementary school, 4th or 5th grade im thinking. wasnt so much about 'sex', more of a quick anatomy type deal.

my parents didnt approach me about sex until they found a condom in the trash. "its a little bit late for this talk dont you think?" was pretty much the whole conversation.
