Anybody have this?

Just wondering how much of a strain it will put on your broadband connection. They say your internet connection "should" still work the same as it did before you installed the Lingo connection. I detect they are not being forthright.

I had the AT&T version and am currently switching to Vonage. There was no difference to my internet connection at all.

For the most part you will not notice any difference. The only time you will see a difference is if you are maxing out your badwidth and you start to use the phone. Then you will see your connection speed seem to drop a bit but hardly to a noticable degree.

I'm not sure about that service Mindia but we use: http://www.ringcentral.com

We're very happy with it. Basically its a proxy service that lays over an existing basic phone line.

You pay for the basic phone line and this service adds in all kinds of additional services over it, including a new number and you get a certain amount of talk time a month for calls anywhere.

Not sure if its what your looking for but it is excellent for a business.

comcast is coming out with their own in a couple months here (here).

edit: Mindia I laughed when I saw you live in Sacramento. It kind of explains everything. That city scares the crap out of me.

Vonage is good. we have had cable phone and I do not see a significant drop in bandwidth. However, I would recommend getting a store bought router instead of the shitty lynksys most companies give you.

:dunno:

I was born and raised in the San Francisco bay area (Born in the wine country of Napa/Sonoma, lived in Danville, Pleasanton, Union City, Alameda, and San Jose. Then I moved up to Reno and lived there for almost 9 years. I just moved to the Sacramento area 2 years ago. I actually live on the border of EL Dorado Hills, and Folsom. Out of curiosity... what does where somebody comes from have to do with anything?

Mindia and the rest of you IP telephony users :p, it is a great technology but be cautious of 911 and emergency calls.

Also make sure you have an alternate route for voice traffic, like a cell phone, keep an analog line, etc. No power, no phone, that sort of sucks. Analog old as sin but has no AC power requirements.

Not sure about the details but I've read several snips where vonage and some other ip telephony services were in some sort of litigations lawsuit deal becuase 911 calls got dropped, or couldn't be routed at all.

Also note that IP telephony phone conversations are recorded, not stored (yet) but recorded. It is a requirement for IP telephony. Every "bit" you speak is written on a hard drive someplace, then near instantly regurgiated to voice. I can post more details if you like :p. No I'm not the ultra paranoid that thinks every current analog converstaion is recorded and analyzed by the NSA.

IMHO IP telephony will become a bane soon enough. Looking forward I'd go so far to say that IP telephony will become a standard or commonplace, as will permenant record of every phone call :( (win for thw lawyers tho :p )

EDIT:
Wanted to add a bit on 911. In the US, a 911 call from any analog line can nearly pinpoint your location very quickly. IP Telephony, not so, the call of origin is never your location but some HUB city sometimes in a different state alltogether.

VoIP isn't going to be the killer app that everyone thinks it will

It's pretty hard to convince people to pay a comparable price for a slightly inferior service (you need to power the phone, and it's not 99.999% reliable like the old phone system)

I'm sure someone will point out the price difference, but that's just marketing
(ie telco's could use the same pricing model as voip if they chose)

It's going to destroy traditional POTS given enough time.... especially in the enterprise.

Within ten years your phone, tv, computer and house will all be run off of one cable. I have no doubt about it.

And when the finally do I may switch back but right now I'm paying $50 less a month for VoIP. I don't count the cost of broadband since I would have that anyway.

The 2 times I had to call 911 I had absolutely no problems with it. They do make you tell them the address you have the box at for 911 purposes, since you can pick the box up and take it with you anywhere and get all your calls just like you were home.

Would you like to expound on that and inform us all on how you think Sacramento is a delusional city?
