Advice For Kids: How To Get Hired By Mr. Gates

By Aaron Ricadela Courtesy of InformationWeek

Time was, talented computer jocks would knock on Microsoft's doors and wait for an audience with its hiring gatekeepers. Now, Microsoft can't hire the kind of folks it needs fast enough. Listen to chairman Bill Gates' sales pitch at the company's Faculty Summit for researchers in Redmond, Wash., this month: "Microsoft is trying to hire every great college graduate who has basic computer-science skills and we think is highly talented," he said. "We've got open head count, these are super-well-paying jobs, you can get your own office." When Bill Gates has to dangle a door to convince talented programmers to come work for him, times are tough.
It's not just Microsoft feeling the pinch. Enrollment in computer science as an undergraduate major fell by more than 60% between 2000 and 2004, according to a UCLA study, while the Labor Department lists data analysts, health-information technicians, and software engineers among the fastest-growing jobs in the next seven years. Microsoft isn't finding enough people to hire in the United States, even as it plans to keep the majority of its development in Redmond, Gates said. "The competition for someone who has the right background is phenomenal," he added.

As computer science sinks, the fastest-growing college major in the country is phys ed, Gates said. That set him off on a mocking riff. "What is going on in that field? I mean, are they making breakthroughs like speech recognition or artificial intelligence? I'm dying to see these new games they're inventing, new rules. The poor Chinese, they don't realize this is the coming field, and 10 years from now they're going to wake up and say, 'Oh no, physical education, we completely missed that activity.'"

So what's the secret to landing one of those open Microsoft jobs? "Say somebody came for an interview and they said, 'Hey, I read The Art Of Computer Programming, that's all I ever read, I did all the problems,'" hypothesized Gates, who'll host 1,200 interns on his lawn this summer. "I would hire them right then," he said. "Even if they didn't do the double-star problems.

And that new sig owns... I think I'll keep it for a while

Yes, it is a serious article Ralf. I posted it because of a couple people whined about losing their jobs to outsourcing and that Bill Gates was only importing programmers from India or some BS. I give you the truth. This was an article we had to read in my last organizational management class. The cold, hard truth is... you will only get laid off as a programmer at Microsoft you don't have the right education, or because you're a smacktard... not because Bill Gates is an evil penny-pinching outsourcer.

hahah... I still don't believe it....

That was Bill's attempt at trying to sugar coat and justify the whole Microsoft outsourcing agenda.

There are tons of unemployed techies who would beg for a shitty job. There is no shortage. These companies don't want to look like shit for hiring Acqbar for 10 cents an hour in front of their biggest consumer market: America.

Microsoft contracted with Infosys and Satyam. But bottom line is... if you're really as good as you think you are Microsoft is going to keep you. You heard it from Gates' mouth... he's looking for educated, talented people. He didn't say, "I'm looking for educated, talented people from India."

Here's some info on Satyam:

Guess somone needs to inform Gates that his company isn't living up to his words. They are still laying off amazing programmers and techs and outsourcing the jobs.

Perfect example would be one of the programmers that I work with who had applied to MS 3 times over the past 2 years. But I guess is Master in CMSC, 10+ years programming experience, certifiactions in almost all MS systems, CCIE and such just wasn't enough for them. But wait it must be he was over qualified and would need to be paid more then $0.50/hr

More likely he is just making excuses like "I dont want to outsource but since we dont have any able people here I am forced to" When the real story is "OMG they work for how much over there, fire everyone and hire people over there"

Just out of curiosity... would you happen to know what salaries are like at Infosys and Satyam? I'd be really interested to find out.

At Infosys, a fresh graduate who joins as a software engineer is offered an average salary of approximately Rs 18,000 ($415.32)per month.

The average starting salary at Microsoft was about 35K a year or $2916/month

So MS is saving an avg of $2500 a month by outsourcing on each person.

So, what is Microsoft paying now? Gates said he's looking for people despite the outsourcing.

Gates says he is looking for people, while he is laying people off and outsourcing more. He is getting ready to start outsourcing in China.

Why the hell is he saying he's trying to find quality graduates here? Either he's full of shit and lying to us, or somebody else is full of the beans...

He is full of telling people what makes him look good. Are you at all surprised that he would say what makes him look good and at the same time do what is beter financially for his company? Because Bill Gates has never lied to anyone to further his company

So if an actress says she became an actress to donate all her money to saving the rainforest, shes telling the truth?

Bill Gates is a famous man constantly in the public eye, of course he says what the public views as socially acceptable

When you actually work for him is the only time you'll get the real story - you can't truly believe the media and what people tell the media

There are so many out of work IT people in this country, there is no reason MS would need to outsource if they didn't want to. Bill Gates is doing what he has always done, what he considers best for MS.

Why in the world would he pay somone 35K/year when he can pay 5K/yr. Not only has he already outsourced to India, and continuing to increase the numbers of MS people in india, he is about to start outsourcing to China where they pay even less then in India.

It really sucks for the people in this country, but he isn't concerned about that, he is concerned with $$.

What you're saying makes sense. It sounds like he's only looking out for the bottom line.

You heard it from Gates' mouth...

Hey bro...

Bill Gates is a mediocre programmer at best.... But he is an amazingly savvy salesman and businessman, backed by some excellent PR people.

He can talk shit all day about needing more American programmers but the reality is that there are plenty of highly skilled unemployed programmers who would kill for a job at MS....

This is a MS PR stunt pure and simple.

There it is they want you trained their way. Basic skills means they dont want imagination or anything they have to retrain.

So what do the new crop of microsoft programmers and these items have in common?
