My daughter was in Kindergarten last year, and while the public schools here aren't horrible, at about 4-6th something breaks down. I figure it's because some basic principle is getting skipped early on that degenerates into real problems later.
Homeschooling is something I had looked into since my oldest was born and seriously considered it before she went to school last year. If we had stayed in GA I would have homeschooled from the beginning.
I do wonder about the missed socialization mainly because I see how much they really enjoy themselves at Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. But I can't see ruining their education for recess and it's not like I don't have activities planned that involve other kids.
