ALEXANDRIA, Va., Jan. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- In 2005, employment of
information technology (IT) workers returned to the levels that existed in
2001 -- the year of the last U.S. recession. According to the National
Association of Computer Consultant Businesses (NACCB), in 2005, national IT employment climbed to 3,527,700 -- returning to the level of IT employment in 2001 when employment stood at 3,527,100.
These latest IT employment figures come from the IT employment index published by the National Association of Computer Consultant Businesses (NACCB), the national trade association representing IT staffing and solutions firms.
While the economy began to expand toward the end of 2001 which marked the end of the recession, IT employment continued to fall. With the growth of IT employment picking up markedly in 2004, IT employment is now back to 2001 levels.
"In light of the downward pressure on IT employment following Y2K, the bursting of the Tech Bubble, the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the 2001
recession, I am heartened by the 2005 employment figures evidencing strong employment growth in IT," said Mark Roberts, NACCB CEO. With IT employment stronger in the second half of 2005, all signs point to continued growth in 2006.

Year IT Employment
2001 3,527,100
2002 3,339,500
2003 3,369,300
2004 3,522,900
2005 3,527,700

"Based on reports of IT staffing companies citing high demand for their
services, we believe employment in IT staffing is up markedly -- outstripping the growth in IT employment generally," said Roberts. IT staffing companies assist their clients in augmenting the client's direct IT staff. When demand for IT workers increases after a downturn, many firms turn to IT staffing companies to assist them in meeting their IT employment needs.
