How is that forcing him to conform? Sounds like it made him into a one of a kind psycho.

Those that can't or won't bend end up broken, I guess.
Inside each person lives two wolves. One is loyal, kind, respectful, humble and open to the mystery of life. The other is greedy, jealous, hateful, afraid and blind to the wonders of life. They are in battle for your spirit. The one who wins is the one you feed.

You are missing the point. It wasn't about conforming. He couldn't conform that he talked different or that he was Asian.

The fact he was a bit different should not be a big deal, and absolutely should not make him the object of a lot of scorn, derision, and spite.

However it did, and this type of behavior is the norm in many American schools, and for any reason, be it race, religion, or even ones hair. This type of crap can wreck a kid to the point of self hatred and suicide, or worse...and sadly, it is very common and allowed.

This is what I believe Triel and Martrae are talking about. This type of bile is not the exception. It is hurtful and is terrible for kids.

The problem is the lack of control of administrators and the powers of the nasty peer infrastructures in school. This subverts the Academic process and allow for these places to be less about learning and more about the class and click warfare.

This occurs due to our idiotic public school setup that prevents the type of control needed to ensure that the immature swaths of people with little discipline or respect learned at home do not have the gang presence to wreck other kids.

Kids be mean and cruel. We see it everyday on this board. Most of us saw it when we were growing up. The lessening of control in schools and the current culture of the thug that seems to perpetuate makes for that much more nastiness.

I may have seen things different through my school being the "big fish in the pond", but I don't see that even being CLOSE to the things wrong with public education at all.

I hardly think you can blame the school system for the fact that America is filled with ignorant assholes that are raising little ignorant asshole children.

charter schools would do absolutely nothing to the whole kids being mean to other kids problem, the only way to do that is to isolate them all and do what matrae is doing, avoid having her kids around others. This isn't a school problem, but a tolerance and a parenting problem

I disagree, the difference is local charter schools are controlled by the community and allow for better teachers, stricter rules, and an easier time removing problem kids.

Leave the problem kids to the public schools, right?

Take the public schools as they are now, take all the good teachers and students out of them, and imagine what they'll be like.

the quality of the teacher really won't have any change in how the kids interact with each other during recess or during lunch. Are you going to force the kids to be friends with each other in these schools? This isn't even about problem kids, using the guy from VT as an example, would you have kicked every kid out of that class for being problem children because they laughed when he read? Sure there are alot of other things that could have been done, and in that case I would say that the teacher was to blame there.

There are many problems with the school system but kids are kids and whether they go to charter schools, private schools or public schools, that won't change

His parents should have beat him more often for being such a bleeding whiny pussy.

Parents if your kid is a whiny pussy, beat his/her ass and tell them to go mow your lawn.
