From Associated Press:

LOS ANGELES - An 82-year-old woman received a $114 ticket for taking too long to cross a street. Mayvis Coyle said she began shuffling with her cane across Foothill Boulevard in the San Fernando Valley when the light was green but was unable to make it to the other side before it turned red.

She said the motorcycle officer who ticketed her on Feb. 15 told her she was obstructing traffic.

"I think it's completely outrageous," said Coyle, who described herself as a Cherokee medicine woman. "He treated me like a 6-year-old, like I don't know what I'm doing."

Los Angeles police Sgt. Mike Zaboski of the Valley Traffic Division said police are cracking down on people who improperly cross streets because pedestrian accidents are above normal. He said he could not comment on Coyle's ticket other than to say that it is her word against that of the citing officer, identified only as Officer Kelly.

"I'd rather not have angry pedestrians," Zaboski said. "But I'd rather have them be alive."

Others, however, supported Coyle's contention that the light in question doesn't give people enough time to cross the busy, five-lane boulevard.

"I can go halfway, then the light changes," said Edith Krause, 78, who uses an electric cart because she has difficulty walking.

On Friday, the light changed too quickly even for high school students to make it across without running. It went from green to red in 20 seconds.

Councilwoman Wendy Greuel said she has asked transportation officials to figure out how to accommodate elderly people.

"We should look at those areas with predominantly seniors and accommodate their needs in intersections" she said.

I support the cop on this one. I should have to be late for work because some coffin liner cant get the wonder cane moving faster? And this whole crap about the wheelchair not going fast enough is bullshit. I have two of them here at work(boss is building a robot with them) and those blue hair carts can push speeds of 15 to 20mph with my ass in them.

Print this out, put it in an evelope and write "do not open until 2040". You'll probably find that you were an asshole.

Someone works and lives their entire lives only to be disrespected by punk pricks like you. There is something to be said for having manners.

How about a solution that accomodates everyone? Put a median in the middle of the intersection so those that can only make it halfway have a place to wait for the second light change. Or an even simpler solution, make the light changes longer.

we need to do what the eskimo's do...Put their old people on a iceberg naked in the middle of the night, hand them a knife and wish them the best of luck.

when I get that old I plan on finding a nice high tower close to the DNC and taking out as many dumbasses as I can before they take me out.

Old people that have outgrown their usefullnes to society should be locked away in retirement homes. For the more active fogies, send them to retirement communities where they won't bother the rest of the faster paced world. Let them out to visit family and friends, but they have to use public transportaion.

I do not tolerate old people and I don't expect to be tolerated when I am old. The only people I intend on pissing off to no extent are family.

You people obviously don't have grandparents that you love. Obviously you wouldn't be such dismissive bastards if you did.

Fuck fast paced. We need the yin and the yang to keep us balanced.

And you think it's bad now? Just wait 10 years from now when the baby boomers are elderly. lol better get use to it.

LOL! This reminded me of a story from my mother. She is a physical therapist and works mainly with geriatric patients. (Her patience and love towards them is amazing, but thats another story). Anyway, some of the patients love to get a little crazy now and then. One man got his power wheel chair privlages revoked after two incidents. The first was when he drove it full speed into the Christmas Tree. The second time he apparently decided he had enough of his attending nurse. He gunned the wheel chair to its full speed and took off, my mother witnessed him fly by with the nurse standing on the back of the chair yelling for help. I guess she did not appreciate a free ride.

Yes...I do have grandparents. The ones that are alive..including my 101 year old Great Grandmother. Still lives at home. Plants 2 rows of corn each year and cans peaches. When she needs to goto town for something one of her go knows how many children/grand children/Great Grand Children/ Great Great Granchildren/Great Great Great Grandchildren takes her ass to town.when they arrive she waits till her little blue hair mobile is down...she climbs into that then tries to run over as many slow people as possible.

Love her to death for the main reason she believes slow and ineffcient people are to root problem with the world.

For my other two. My grandfather had himself placed in a Veterans Retirement home since he can no longer get around that well. My Grandmother Long since divorced from my grandfather is still crazier than a shit house rat and is living in Arizona in a 34 foot rv that she dusts off every so often and drives to georgia to pester the shit out of my mother.

My deceased Grandfather and Grandmother before they died both decided to move into a retirement home since they no longer could get around as fast as they once did. This is the right thing to do.

dont care. dont like most of them and as far as my great Grandmother is concerned she will most likely out live me. Coffin liners to me are old people that have one foot in the coffin and think that we owe them something. I dont owe them shit.

Ginz, you will never get Kahar to be anything other than tactless in his remarks. Believe me, I've tried.
Inside each person lives two wolves. One is loyal, kind, respectful, humble and open to the mystery of life. The other is greedy, jealous, hateful, afraid and blind to the wonders of life. They are in battle for your spirit. The one who wins is the one you feed.

I was brought up to do likewise. I believe there is quote about gauging a society by how it treats it's elderly -- which escapes me at the moment.

Could it be that you are looking for the bad? Thus your fuse is a lot shorter than it would be with say, someone your own age or younger?

Like when you go into a movie that has an actor you don't like, you are probably a lot less likley to give that movie a chance had the actor not been in it despite the fact that the movie might actually be pretty good.

first off..I dont go to too many movies. Most of the movies released to date suck ass.

My fuse is fine. I dont have any need for anyone who does not pull thier load. If your a slack ass, your part of the problem not part of the solution. And I dont have much love for anyone younger or the same age either if you are a drain on society. If your useless then please do us all a favor and move somewhere else... Like France.

As for old people, I have 0 tolerance for people such as the ones in the grocery store that decide to stop their cart in the middle of an isle to talk to Edna about what happened after the last bingo game on wednesday night. I have 0 tolerance for people that cause a disruption in my daily routine. These people are considered constipators, no matter what age they are. And quite frankly I have great days when they dont interrupt my shit.

You sound like you are impatient and generally a selfish human being. That's not a personal attack as I am sure you would agree with me.

Oh well, to each his own.

Im not selfish. I just dont think I should have to deal with inconsiderate assholes.

Blocking a whole isle in the grocery story...When I am nice enough to say 'Excuse me' and she say "Ill move in a bit" I get annoyed. at this point will will take her cart and push it down the isle about 50 feet and continue with my shopping.
When some old bitch stands in a empty parking spot to talk to a friend and will not move when I goto park..I just got to run the bitch over.

In 2040, we'll all be flying hover cars that we pilot using our telepathic powers while having sex games with our fellow motorists. Old people at crosswalks won't exist, silly goose.

Also, we'll all be speaking German.
