When liquids freeze do they expand, or do they expand when they are hot? When they freeze right?

*Water* expands when it freezes. I'm not sure that *all* liquids do. Though I'm hard pressed to think of a liquid that isn't water, or doesn't contain water that freezes.

Freezing is simply the state change of a liquid congealing and becomeing a solid. For example, water freezes at 0 degrees Celsius.
Iron's freezing point is around 1500 degrees Celsius.

WATER expands when it freezes, and is one of the only substances that does.

Most substances do not, and, in fact, shrink and become denser when they freeze.

generally for matter there are three states, gas ---> liquid ---> solid, for almost all substances as you go from left to right, things contract. One major exception to this rule is water. The reason for this is that crystals are formed in the solid by hydrogen bonds due to the dipole nature of the molecule (one negative part, the oxygen, and one positive part, both hydrogens).

Water does shrink as you cool it, up to a certain point, somewhere around 3 degrees if I remember well, when it starts expanding

Why do people ask simple questions on a message board that can be researched on google or ask.com in a matter of minutes?

Oh because then we wouldnt have an entire thread about something retarded that increases our post countz!!!11

+1 omg

Because its so much more fun to see where threads lead here. On google, sure you will get an answer but here, you will get an answer and so much more.

one easy way of looking at it from an atomic level is to think about molecules going around all over the place. As you add heat, you excite them and they take up more room, they move around more, this is a gas. As you cool things down, the molecules get sluggish and move less, they take up less room, this is a liquid. If you cool things down ever more these molecules take up even less room, they never stop moving (unless you hit absolute 0), but they move less and less and take up even less room and you have a solid. The reason water is different is that instead of just colapsing, water is able to build structures when they stop moving enough.

P.S. +1

huhm. i always thought it was the opposite for water for some reason. idiot, durr.

i DO know that the materials that bridges are made out of expand when they're hot, because bridges have those joints that allow for the expansion.

Just think of ice cubes in your freezer. :)

Nope Leah, When I put my water in the ice cube trays and freeze them, alot of the time, the ice cubes have spaces around them depending on how full I fill hte tray.

Too many chemicals and additives in your water.

My icecubes only shrink if they've been in the freezer forever. The newer cubes are fine.
