Amazon.com Marketing Scam

Postby Diekan » Thu Nov 23, 2006 1:33 pm

So, Amazon just had a deal "1,000" Xbox 360 Core for 100 dollars for the first 1000 customers.

I was on the phone with a friend of mine who was all excited and actually thought he had a chance. Of course he didn't. No one really does. So I figured I'd fuck around with it and see what was going on. I KNEW there wasn't a chance in hell of getting one - but anyway. Sure enough right at 11am PST the Amazon site completely froze up.

Now my quesiton is... obviously it was just a marketing scam to get people to come to their site - hoping that dolts would just say "welllll I didn;t win an Xbox but let me spend some money while I'm here anyway!" Are people really THAT stupid to fall for it? I figure all Amazon did was piss off about 40,000 people who simultaneously clicked out of the site thinking "fuck you Amazon."

You Deik, but the scam works even if they sell 1000 360s for a cheap price. 40 times the number of people who go a great deal are gonna buy some crap they don't need anyways. That's why I think it's probably not a scam, some marketing dude crunched some numbers and they knew exactly what they could afford to lose.

It's no different than Best Buy and tomorrow. My brother in law is camping out tonight to get one of the "18 at each store" toshiba lap tops for $250 bucks. Not a top of the line rig but they're definately losing money on it.

I got my 360 premium for about $70 through one of those "Get an XBox360, just click here!" banners.

It was before xmas last year and I'm sure the qualifications have changed so it's probably not as good a deal these days.

http://www.premiumholidaygifts.com

I had to spend about $70 on useless crap and cancel a bunch of stuff I had to sign up for and then wait about 3 months but it was worth it, for sure.

It looks like they are doing laptops now but I know they have done Ipods, plasma screen TV's etc.
