Have the digital cameras caught up with the old traditional film 35mm's cameras?

Vonkaar has a nice digicam, not sure who else would be in the know.

I've never outgrown my Pentax personally... it is the same one that my mother used in college. Light meter is broken, but I've learned how to guestimate well enough to result in awesome pictures.

I would love to find a digital camera that could compare to my 35mm, but I don't think it will happen in the next 5 years.

for black and white or B&W infrared i use an old half-broken nikon F1 (used to have a leica point-and-shoot that died a few years ago), and for color i use a nikon D1H, i have a few different lenses but my current favorite is a 50-200 f2.8 telephoto

as for the original question: have digital cameras caught up to 35mm film cameras? i can't say. anymore, i think it has more to do with the person using the camera than it does with whether it's digital or film. kind of like guitars-- some people can get the most amazing sounds out of an old beat-up stratocaster and a '60s fender twin, while other people require thousands upon thousands of dollars' worth of fancy digital processing toys to get the sound they're looking for.

I have been searching and reading up on the subject through a lot of different boards. The opinions seem to be the same... that the digital cameras are pretty much the way to go now, but many hang on to film for the same reason people held onto vinyal records for so much longer after newer technologies started replacing them.

In fact a couple of posters, on one of these blogs, working for a major magazine said they use only high quality digital cameras now.

They also pretty much all agreed that anything >8 megapixal would produce professional quality work.

So, I guess that's pretty much it.

My best friend owns a $800 Nikon digital camera, it owns the balls off of anything she ever did with regular film. But you can't beat film as far as fun factor goes, since you get to play with chemicals etc to develope.

i hear for digital media you really would want to go with a digital SLR which used to cost about $2,000+ but i have no idea nowadays.

i used to do manual photography in high school and i used a Pentax K1000 that i got handed down to me from my father and it was considered one of the best 35mm you could use.

it all depends on what you have available, imo:

digital is awesome if all you have access to is a nice megapixel camera and a good printer and know your way around photoshop. you can make awesome stuff

manual is best in my opinion, though, because i'm a fan of analogue and if you have a dark room available to you then you should gow ith manual. the dark room is 50% of manual photography (look at ansel adams). taking your roll of film to wal*mart 1-hour photo isn't a good use of manual photography resources

yeah my D1H is a digital SLR hand-me-down from my dad (check out http://www.rickhouchin.com for some REAL art), which apparently cost almost $5k when the newspaper bought it for him tee hee

but imo there's no beating actual film for B&W applications. that's why it's great to have access to both, as well as a dad with a darkroom :D

No, digitals haven't caught up, but they are almost there.

Even though they aren't past, they are indeed still the way to go.

If you're just starting, I'd suggest one of the Rebel digital cameras.

I inherited a canon 35mm that came with three lenses and filters...I'm almost scared to delve into it (because of my excitement hehe) but I can't wait to finally pick it up and start learning. I have a few friends that know a bit about it so I'm going to ask for some help...and I feel lucky to be able to learn on the old style camera. It's from like 1985 or something.

Yes with 35mm, 50mm etc. It really just depends on how much money you are willing to spend.

I recently picked up canon 400d with two lenses and I haven't had much opportunity to use it around here yet. The weather is picking up though, soon it will be time to go out and start wandering around and looking for opportunities.
