i tend to agree with you when it comes to those who think that lil wayne is the end all be all of music, and young jeezy, hurricane chris, all of those rubbish people.

i'm surprised gypsiee didn't suggest anything because she has pretty good taste.

do you want new rap or new hip hop? they're two totally different programs and you didn't say what you're sick of listening to so i can't give you any new artists to check out

Timbaland album is the hottness imo. I think it's very well done. I <3 the song with Elton John.

Kayne is an OKAY at best album there are 2 good songs imo on it, the stuff that didnt make the album is better imo.

Shrug there is lots of new stuff out there that is a decent mix of hip hop / jazz / blues roots that seem to be springing up all over that is fairly good listening.

Not a fan of any of the above tbh, minus the classic 'rebirth of slick' song by digable planets

I think I'm alone in this, but I've never, ever liked the beastie boys.

you're not alone. they're really whiney and the music is throwaway

if i listen to hiphop i hover close to DJ Premier projects like the group home or gang starr. i also enjoy J Dilla, Madlib, DJ Quik, MF Doom, etc.... real aural architects. not a record label's pet like Timbaland. is he cool Mop? does he wear black timbs and stomp people out???? IS HE GHETTO??? hahaha. i just really hate mainstream rap, sorry, you can't ever make it cool to me until you show me an artist that's more concerned with his music than his PR.

granted MF doom is pretty well-known now, but he, like J Dilla in A Tribe Called Quest, has been writing music for decades. all these fuckin losers like TI and Tupac ride the coattails of intellectual composers and writers and just hit it big because they're pretty boys. like Ghostface Killer's new album rips a bunch of old MF Doom beats from the early '90s and tracks from Dilla's Donuts and he acts like he's fucking cool or something by straight up stealing four or five beats. I also hate Tupac. he wasn't born on the west coast. he didn't even grow up on the west coast. but everybody thinks he's like this iconic god-like figure and intellectual. i mean come on, he went to drama school in NYC. he can act better than he can sing or rap or whatever

and trust me mop, jazzy hip hop is nothing new. if anything new is coming out that's extremely soulful, they're just trying to take it back to the late '80s/early '90s when people sampled beats by James Brown etc... try listening to Moodymann sometime, or Kool G Rap and DJ Polo, or Mobb Deep's first album, or Jeru the Damaja, or whatever... there's so much old hip hop that most people don't know about, i'd recommend delving into that than any trash on MTV or your local radio station

Hrm odd when im in the gym, I really dont think about their PR - or their new coats or their car or where they are from, Usually if it has a good beat and a good hook I could care less if its brittney spears singing it. I dont get caught up in the whole I cant like it because it's by so and so. You go ahead and spend your life, Worried about shit like that... I'll just continue to be happy with what I am listening too and if I don't like it - I can always skip to the next song. The hip hops gods would come down from the heavens and smite me if they found out that /gasp timb is next to arrested development on a play list for cycling, or that jedi mind tricks is next to linkin park which is next to the beatles on a hill interval play list.

But I get it you dont like main stream music, because you are different, like everyone else.

Jesus fucking christ Deiken - I said some new stuff out there... Durr thank you for the music lesson tho I was not aware that hip hop artists prior to yesterday had combinded the idea of blues, and jazz... next thing you will tell me there are artists out there combining rock and /gasp hip hop. My enitre point of that statement was that one, he gave no idea of what kind of hip hop he liked. From southern, to old school style club mixes that have been reworked, to more obscure stuff, to strait freestyles. And with the interwebs.. not only can we find porn and lolcats - I think you can even download and find all sorts of music that ten years ago you may not have be privilged too.

Omg Daft punk with Wycleff just followed I left my wallet in el segundo on random play... I am so gunna die in my sleep tonight.

I do like DJ Shadow - midnight in a perfect world is a great one.

I'm a huge Dilla fan - premier, hi-tek, - it's just a very sad thing to see people who make all these horrible assumptions about the genre based on these idiots like TI and Three 6 Mafia making this godawful racket and it's what makes the top 40, so people assume that everyone who makes hiphop is making that nonsense. I will admit that my guilty top 40 favorite is Kanye - he's done some great work with common and kweli, two who I have a great respect for as they steer clear of the stereotypical and make beats and music that actually have some worth and not the repetitious saying the same words and the same beat over and over again for 4 excruciating minutes.

Mop mentioned Jedi Mind Tricks.. Jonathan is a huge fan but man, I can't stand them - some toothless fatass white muslim screaming at the top of his lungs about his general disdain toward pretty much everything - his whole basis is anti christian and thats totally fine because I'm not religious myself, but for pete's sake I just find it obnoxious.

9th Wonder/Little Brother, Kev Brown, J Live (his earlier stuff) some Clipse, Lupe Fiasco and the like are all artists I listen to personally.

yeah christ, sorry, but if you think anybody on MTV's top 40 has a good beat under their song except kanye west, you need to go get J Dilla's Donuts. it's instrumental. i think it'll open your ears so to speak if you don't know who he is (he was part of the Ummah, production group for a tribe called quest). he passed from lupus last year, but the legacy lives through all of his albums and tracks he did for people like Common, who he produced near-entire albums for in the late '90s

jedi mind tricks is bad i agree. it's right up there with ...of old diminion and aesop rock and El-P and sage frances and all that other trash that tries really really hard to be intelligent

i don know wher mop gets off thinking i don't listen to mainstream. i'm pretty sure Gang Starr was one of the longest-lived duos of all-time and they have more rep across the world than any other hip hop group. also rakim and KRS One basically changed the face of MCing as we know it. i'm also a fan to a lesser degree of dr dre's production, nas, jay-z, and 50 cent. the only real underground i delve into is this guy from chicago called Diverse. If anything, you're the one listening to the new crappy stuff no one's ever heard of except other 15-year-old girls that watch MTV. we call them fake MCs. but after you study up on the shit you're trying to diss me about, you come back and we'll have this dispute again

IMO Kanye's vocal ability is too static and I have a thing against too much sampling so Graduation didn't really do it for me. I can recognize it as a good CD but just not my taste. Lyrically I think Kanye is really good, as is Common and TK. As far as the top 40 go I do derive enjoyment from Luda, TI and Chamillionaire. I think lyrically they are really creative. I also really like Memphis Bleek's latest and think he is underrated.

Best rapper ever though is Del!

Del is great. isn't he ice cube's cousin or something, too?

but seriously if these guys are so lyrically creative, post your favorite verses by some of them. i have no idea what they say because i choose not to listen to them but you put it in a way that makes me interested. then i'll post verse by some of mine

I'll post some lyrics later but let me explain Luda really quickly. Lyrically if you look at his words, he's not much different from your usual bling and women rapper lifestyle. Luda's creativity comes in the context that he uses. He makes that lifestyle look downright silly. One of his albums is called Chicken and Beer for god sakes. He takes the words that come recycled by your average Soulja Boy, Dem Franchise Boyz, Keak tha Sneak and what he does is he glorifies it and uses the tone of his voice to mock it at the same time. That's why Luda is great.
