Suggestions?

Postby Ouchyfish » Fri Oct 19, 2007 5:26 am

Where I live, we used to have a winter. Now we have some kind of bullshit extended summer/fall. My wife and I want to move somewhere where the summers get no warmer than the low to mid 70's, the humidity stays below 30% and the winters are cold and snowy but not to the point where if your car breaks down you're dead, literally.

Any suggestions? (TIA)

I'm thinking the only way to get anything close to what we're looking for is going to be north of our border.

In Asheville NC the weather is like that in the mountains. There is a place called Mars Hill where in the middle of the summer (week of the 4th even) the temperature never goes above 75.

I was gonna say, I think you'd find what you want in any state with mountains. Otherwise, MN has close to what you are looking for. The winters here have been completely pussified for many years now. We get a few snow storms and the temp dips below zero maybe 3 times a winter now. Otherwise, in Jan and Feb, the temps are in the teens or single digits usually.

Summer is another story though, you'll be in the 80's and 90's for at least a month but the spring and fall are my favorite seasons here. I love the 50's and 60's temps.

How about someplace like Anchorage, Alaska?

From the Anchorage website:
Spring through fall, Anchorage's climate is similar to San Francisco's spring weather, with temperatures that can reach into the 70's. Summer highs average 65 degrees F/18 degrees C.

Winters bring on the snow with high temperatures dipping into the 20s, creating a climate very much like ski resorts in the Rocky Mountains, Canada or Europe. Low humidity also contributes to Anchorage's comfortable climate.

And hell, Alaska not only doesn't have a state income tax or state sales tax, they make so much extra money every year from the oil rights, they actually pay every resident of the state a yearly dividend just for being a resident. That's right, instead of taking a chunk from your paycheck, the Alaska state government pays YOU. Last year, every resident got a check for about $1100. Residents include children, by the way, so even if you have a 2 year old, say, he'll get a check too, in the same amount as you get. Not to mention, everyone knows how gorgeous it is up there...

Alaska is sounding really freakin sweet. With those oil dividends, I wonder how bad the CoL is up there. Thank you for the heads up folks, now at least I have some places to investigate.

:dunno: I hear sealskin boots are pretty comfortable year round. In the wintertime they are even better if you wrap the toes in the whiskers, more insulation!

I dunno about overall cost of living in Anchorage, really. I know it IS higher than a lot of places, cause of the difficulty of importing things. However, looking at Craigslist, you can rent a 1900 sq ft 4br house in the middle of town for 1600 bucks, so it doesn't look like housing costs are exorbitant.

WI was like that, it was gorgeous - Roanoke, VA is also like that - the northern mountains of VA are beautiful.

Boston's housing right now is ridiculous.

$1300 for a studio apartment? That better come with a daily blowjob.

I have some classes with a Mexican exchange student at the U of R who has never seen snow. She's in for a rude shock once winter hits.

I was born in Juneau Alaska, not only is the job market vast (you'd be surprised, especially with rapid expansion rates rising), but it's a beautiful place to live and is home to a completely different culture than you'd see in the lower 48. It really is a great place to live (I moved when I was about 15, or i'd still be up there. I still have plans to make it back there for extended amounts of time, if at all possible.) When I left, the dividened was around 2thousand. It fluctuates every year depending on the revenues of oil production.
