Where they're surfing is a area called Mavericks off of Half Moon Bay, where the waves get as big as they do at pretty much any of the big-wave spots in Hawaii. The difference is, it's Northern California, and the water is freezing cold, and those waves don't end up on a nice beach, they spit you into jagged rocks. More than 1 person has died surfing that spot, including at least one big-name Hawaiian big-wave surfer.
Supposedly the day that was filmed was the biggest waves ever ridden at Mavericks; those faces you see in the video are up to 60-70 feet high. (Surfing 60-70 foot waves, my gods.) I was about 2 miles away when this was going on (December 4th of this year), but it was so foggy and rainy, you couldn't see shit from the shore, or I probably would've gone and tried to watch.
