If you had to pick a religion

Postby Yamori » Wed Jun 08, 2005 8:40 pm

Other than your current religion, what would it be? If you don't have a religion, what would your most preferred one be if you had to choose one?

No picking Atheist or Agnostic or Pantheist - we're talking about an actual religion here! ;)

If I had to choose, I think I would go with one of the fun occult ones, such as Thelema. Things such as rituals could make life more interesting. And the psychological aspects of it are attractive.

How bout you?

Probably have to be Universal Unitarian. They sort of take all kinds. Inclusive = good, exclusive = bad. That or make a serious run at some form of Buddhism.

The Quakers have always piqued my interest as well.

I'd like to know what exactly this salvation is. Cause if it entails never having to read anything to write ever again, well consider me one of those Jesus loving guys.

LOL Do you know anything about Buddhism Almegest? It offers no salvation! I wasn't picking on it, trolling, or being a smartass. Buddhism's basic premises (in so many words) are to be a good person, treat others as you would like to be treated, etc. etc. etc. but it offers NO SALVATION of eternal life such as in Christianity.

Think before you speak up, or google it or something.

Here's a good website in which you can educate yourself:

Actually it really depends on your definition of salvation. Buddhism seeks to reach a state of enlightenment, Many would consider that salvation.

However people debate as to whether Buddhism is really a religion at all or just a philosphy about life. Being as I am an agnostic now, I would say Buddhism though I am not sure you would count that since I have studied it in the past.

Well since being out of your element is something you definitely know more about than me, I'll take your advice.

But since you are familiar with google, might I suggest you look up the word Nirvana.

That's arguing semantics. "Salvation" in the Christian sense means "Everlasting Life" or "Life Eternal." "Enlightenment" in Buddhism does not mean "Life Everlasting" in the Christian sense of "Salvation." That is what I clearly and obviously meant.

Mindia, I don't think you truly know how long everlasting is.

Everlasting life is a great concept, like Communism.

Everlasting, in Christianity, means that it has no ending. That means we who believe in Christ will live with Him in an everlasting life.

Shit, that's a good deal. I don't have to be nice or do good deeds or treat anyone with respect? I just have to believe in God to get into heaven and my hooker murder quotas aren't even gonna dip?

Man I should have gotten in on this scam a long time ago.

Well being as Buddism is about rebirth and Nibbana is considered the end of all suffering and the end of the cycle of rebirth, it can be viewed as Salvation.

Ironically you highlighted the basic premise of Christianity, sans the evangelical bent that turns so many away. If you truly understood Christianity you would not be promoting it as some bizarre after death happiness, but the path to enlightenment here, which is very similar to Buddhism. Alas, you do not really understand it. :(

I have no 'backup' religion. When I lost my faith before I reverted to Agnosticism, if that somewhat answers the question.
