After re-aligning my dusty concepts of LaVeyan Satanism with the appropriate literature I have decided I exiled it from any possibility of maturity at an immature age. All those people stabbing each other and killing poor defenseless goats (I am a vegetarian), I guess somewhere along the lines I let the steriotypical image takeover. Anyone here have direct experience with a Church of Satan or other collaboration of individuals with such philosophies?

I have several good friends back home that have been card carrying members for the last 15 or so years. Great people.

They dont dress in all black and look like they just walked out of Hott Topic. You would never know unless you asked what their beliefs are.

I'd generally stay away from joining satanic churches.

They're generally nothing more than another excuse for petty factions and politics, and don't offer you much more than the prestige of a membership card. Maybe the better ones might offer some interesting essays to read, thats about as good as it will get.

I'd say the path of the loner is the way to go.

Has much good come about from it's existence would you say? Is it simply christianity with different context? Does the CoS yonder your hometown fit the bill of Yamori's blunt generalization? Elaborate~

I mean, obviously, everything sucks "generally." To personalize, the religious teetering where I live is far too chistian biased. An Atheistic/Agnostic Church of Satan functioning with the "militant" blood of Concilliable Eudemonism (Silly Demons, I shall call them) hereabouts could bring lot of resentful community together without having to succumb to ignorant answers of divine questions. Knowing it can be done right and do much good, abolish much selfishness & hate in attempts to collect a community to balance the scales I regard the idea highly. Having thought this through and hypothetically calculated it easily within my grasps if per chance I were so bored in about 3 years, I thought I'd attempt to gather empirical knowledge of such existences elsewhere.

Church of Satan's brand of satanism, and what you see in the media are two different things. They dont sacrifice babies or animals. In fact, they dont believe satan even exists

example of their beliefs:

"11 satanic rules of the earth"

1. Do not give opinions or advice unless you are asked.

2. Do not tell your troubles to others unless you are sure they want to hear them.

3. When in another’s lair, show him respect or else do not go there.

4. If a guest in your lair annoys you, treat him cruelly and without mercy.

5. Do not make sexual advances unless you are given the mating signal.

6. Do not take that which does not belong to you unless it is a burden to the other person and he cries out to be relieved.

7. Acknowledge the power of magic if you have employed it successfully to obtain your desires. If you deny the power of magic after having called upon it with success, you will lose all you have obtained.

8. Do not complain about anything to which you need not subject yourself.

9. Do not harm little children.

10. Do not kill non-human animals unless you are attacked or for your food.

11. When walking in open territory, bother no one. If someone bothers you, ask him to stop. If he does not stop, destroy him.

Theres a wide array of satanists.

While there actually are some who believe in a literal devil (and I know one very intelligent person who belongs in this category), most simply like or respect what satan or lucifer stands for (rationality, self interest, indulgence, ect) - even if he is only a fictional symbol.

For a similar thing, ie, take Buddhism. If there were no living Buddhas, they would still look at the concept of the Buddha as something to be respected and strived towards. Thats pretty much what the satanist attitude is.

A bonus is, Satanism's name is a very handy mechanism for quickly seeing what kind of a person someone is. Just tell a person you're a satanist and see how they react --- if their reaction is immediately negative without any questions, they're probably very small minded. If they react with curiousity and interest and ask you lots of questions, you're probably dealing with a smart, thoughtful person.

There really is no compact name for "rationally self interested humanist hedonists who perform occult rituals" aside from "Satanist", so until you can come up with a better name I don't see why it should be knocked.

I don't give a fuck what they do. It's one religion that peoople should not respect. As a Christian we are to respect other religions, but that is not one of them. They should be put to death just for what they believe in. Extreme u liberals say? U morons.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure thinking someone should be put to death because of their beliefs, let alone beliefs you've never bothered to examine, IS extreme. And stupid. And psychotic.

Any smart, thoughtful person wouldn't give a proclaimed 'Satanist' the time of day.

Yamori, you are too intelligent to not completely understand the silliness of alignment with an 'evil' being solely for the shock value.

I respect people who have valid beliefs. Agnostic, Atheist, various religions. This is not a religion but akin to those who desire to tattoo their entire bodies and pierce every orifice. It's a cry for attention.

Great analogy, Foutty.

Thats just it though, it's not about being "Evil" - it's about showing that many things which have been considered evil for a thousand years are actually good things - mainly - questioning everything, selfishness, and hedonism. These are things that have been blamed on the devil - so I don't think it is an entirely illogical premise to build a quasi religion on that in response.

I realize that the religion is mostly a piecemeal jumble of other philosophies, and given a name that was put in place mainly to get attention and make $$$ for its founder, but I still consider it to be a valid set of beliefs and a valid way of life.

Reading the philosophy introduced me to some new thoughts which genuinely improved my life, considerably. While I'll probably never be a Satanist, I still have a lot of respect for it as it definitely made me a better thinker.
