Postby Markarado » Tue Jul 19, 2005 6:32 pm

I've finally decided that if I don't go back to the US for the college experience I'll regret it for the rest of my life.

I'm pretty set on going to the West coast. I don't know much about schools in the US as I've lived in Asia most of my life. So I could use some suggestions/advice.

I'm looking to go to a big school.

I would also like any information you might have on how long it takes to get residency in different West coast states as I would want to get that to lower the price. I'll probably have to go live wherever for a while to get it.

So please, post! =)

You don't need to live in oregon for a period of time to become a resident?

I think he was saying he didn't recommend any of the schools in Oregon.

Major, large schools on the west coast that are good for about any major: University of Washington, UC Berkeley, UCLA, USC (private - expensive), Stanford (private - REALLY expensive), San Jose State (if you're going for a computer related degree, not so good otherwise). There are other UC campuses, and a large number of other CSU campuses, but UCLA and UC Berkeley are the heads of the UC system, and SJSU is the head of the CSU system. Your major may influence where you go, too. If you're interested in agricultural type stuff, or being a Veterinarian, for example, go to UC Davis, it's easily one of the top 3-5 in the nation at that sort of stuff.

Be aware that most of these, with the possible exception of USC, and more likely exception of Stanford are pretty liberal overall, so given your conservative outlook, you may not fit in so well, especially at UC Berkeley.

Go to Cal Tech or Cal Poly.

Generally politics does not enter the classroom in engineering or tech classes.

If college is like it was when I went to Cal Poly, then you'll fit in fine with college, since 1/2 schools students are Asian people.

Cal Tech is indeed a great school, but a) getting in is difficult, and b) it doesn't fit the "Large" category he was looking for.

Cal Poly? Maybe, I guess.

It is not that difficult to get into Cal Tech. I have Asian people I work with now who went straight from Hong Kong to CalTech with minimal effort.

Do not dis my Alma Mater or I shall taunt you.

It wouldn't really be the college experience I'm looking for if it were a bunch of Asians. Nothing wrong with Asians, but it's not what I'm looking for.

I'm probably not going to go to a private school as I can't afford that.

My politics aren't going to dictate where I go. Beleive it or not I'd have no trouble getting along with you in RL Arlos. That's really not a concern....

I would also like to go to a school with good sports teams =P

what are you planning to study/major in? Maybe that will narrow down your choices. If you want a party school, go to Chico State.

Yes, I do. However, I'm not going to school to party. Having that available, imo, is part of the college experience.

That option is alway available at all colleges since the dawn of time. Are you even interest in getting an education? Or is this just for the experience?

Cal State University Chico is rated the number one party school in California. San Diego State University is rated number two.

Check out University of Washington, UC Berkeley or UCLA then, would be my recommendation. UCLA is probably more a party school than Berkeley, given that it's in Los Angeles. UW has a great reputation for being good at pretty much everything, but it's in Seattle, so you're not in California, if that's important to you. UC Berkeley's graduate school for Business is one of the very best in the nation, actually, top-5 certainly, if not top-2 or 3.

Thanks for the suggestions~ I'll definately be checking these out within the next few days.

Being in California isn't a must for me, but right now I'm thinking that will be where I'm headed.

I have a few other questions tho....

I'll most likely be getting a car when I get to the US. Probably a new one as it's easier to get loans for them with bad credit. I fucked up the first time around...

Are new car prices pretty much the same all around the country, or should I go somewhere specific to buy a car?

Also, what type of car is going to have lower insurance? I know two door cars, convertables, SUV's, and sporty cars are going to be much higher than others. What about mini-vans? Hybrids?

I dont see how anyone could possibly want to go to Oregon for anything. Southern Oregon might be excluded in this, because it has great weed.
