Altered = Spayed :)

And yeah, she has a gorgeous reddish tint to her fur, and light gray-green eyes. Very pretty

She's very pretty Maeya, looks like she's still going to fill out quite a bit more!

She's a real sweetie, and adorable as hell. Changing her name, though. I work with an Amber, and wouldn't want to insult the dog by calling her that.

Will get more pics up in the gallery when I get them off my camera.

Good for you Maeya :). All my dogs are from rescue leagues but they're on the older side, last one was about 5 years old, one before that 7.

Zan, was she a puppy? If she as an older dog, maybe she was abused which would explain her behaviour.

She was definitely abused. She was only one when they got her, but she was really fucked up. If anyone tries to pet her, even now, she'll just squat down and pee.

I think maybe shelters are different than the rescue agencies. At the rescue places, they have foster homes with loving people and other happy dogs, rather than being caged up in a shelter, which tends to have a lot of negative emotions floating around that dogs pick up on (fear, anxiousness, etc.). I think the rescue places do rescue shelter dogs, too, but I think that if you get a dog from one of these agencies, you tend to have better luck because of the different environment.

Our current dog, Chica, was also from one of these agencies. She was a very, very nervous dog, and still gets easily frightened around new people. However, since we got her when she was pretty young, I think that's more just her personality/our coddling rather than anything that happened to her at her foster home. We're learning how to stop enabling her to be a nervous wreck, and she's coming out of her shell, too. The improvement is encouraging.

Lang just IM'd me to tell me that the dogs are taking turns chasing each other around the apartment. I can't wait to get home.

Aww, that's so sad. Dogs are such amazing, friendly, lovable creatures. I can't fathom how anyone can be cruel to them. Such abuse is heartbreaking.

How long have they had her? I have heard that some dogs will re train themselves after tehy trust their masters for a while. Poor puppy.

Its been a while like 2 years or something.

She better, but if you kneel over her and pet her, she will pee.

You just have to know how to handle her.

She has a ton of other problems too. She poops in the house if my parents leave for more then a few hours. Then she eats to to try and hide the evidence.

She won't let any of the other pets have any toys. If my parents other dog grabs a bone or a chew toy, she'll take it right away and hide it. She won't even play with it.

She's just weird.

She seems like a big dog, if you get level with her, will she let you pet her?

That poor baby.

Talk to the Vet and see if they can recommend a dog behaviorist or something, to help you train her out of those habits. Even then though, if she was abused, I am sure there'll always be some residual habit or two.

My parents got a rescue dog a few years back that had been abused, and it took a lot of training to get him normal-sociable. Before that, if he was startled, like if you bumped into him while he was asleep, he'd come up snapping. Given that he weighed probably a good 100 lbs, that understandably was a bit worrisome. Eventually they got him to realize he wasn't in the environment any more, and he turned out to be a really sweet dog, but he never lost that unconscious habit of reflexively growling/uber-defensiveness if he got startled out of a deep sleep. As soon as he woke up enough to remember, he'd get all apologetic and come up to you to get petted, but the reflex was still there.

Anyway, good luck with your parents' dog, hopefully a behaviorist'll be able to make some progress.

Oh, for those curious as to what my parents' dog looks like, here's a small pic of that dog (along with another of their dogs, which is a more normal black), and a bigger pic of him at the beach.

Aww that pic of your dog in the snow made me tear up too.. it looks like her previous owners used to spank her and that's how she braces herself :( Poor thing...I'm sure over time she will get better but I'm sure she remembers.
