If I want to know what the Tanakh says, I ask someone who knows Hebrew.

Look at all the trouble caused by the mistranslation of Isaiah 7:14 and the resulting error in the New Testament by mistranslating 'young woman' (ha'almah) as 'virgin'.

Actually, I asked for a palace in heaven. So, why don't you go ahead and answer the question...

The SDA church believes that you don't get tormented forever and ever in damnation. You just burn up. I made that comment to Lyion because he believes in the fairytale heaven and hell stories and was something he could identify with. Yes I was joking.

Mindia's problem is he goes thru all the motions but doesn't truly understand. He's also not completely comfortable in his role as Christian and so tries to drown out and/or discredit anyone else in an attempt to drown out his own doubts.

Mindia is a fundamentalist. His views are based on a few people espousing their 'ownership' of Christianity based on a flawed poor translation of the Catholic Documents without understanding the original meanings.

The sad thing is most of the foundation of his beliefs are flawed and he clearly does not understand Christianity, or he would try and get a deeper meaning from real Scholars versus those who do not have thousands of years of history and discussion.

Their kind has the answers to everything and a batphone to someone they think is God, but they are in for a shock.

We shall see. I would highly suggest you do some real research and not live in a vacuum.

Lyion wrote:Ganzo, what is your view on ancient Jewish texts not written in Hebrew?

There is no quick way to explain it. There is Bible Hebrew, and there is Modern Hebrew. Modern Hebrew derived from Bible Hebrew but has noticeble difrence(think Shakesperian vs Modern English). Bible Hebrew was never a spoken language, it is more of a ceremonial, poetical version of language spoken by Ivri nomads. After establishment of David's kingdom, the language became pure ceremonial/religious, while spoken language was Aramaic(common language of middle east spoken from Egypt to Persia). Most of Jewish religious texts writen after that time including early Talmud were writen in Aramaic. Later when Jews settled in europe, Hebrew was once again used for Talmud and Bible commentary.
When you study Judaism you study texts in both Hebrew and Aramaic and learn both languages. What language text is in does not matter, and long as it is ORIGINAL language of said text.

Lyion wrote:What is your opinion on the Essenes and the Dead Sea Scrolls?

They were a cult. My opinion of them and their writings is same as my opinions of any other cults.

Lyion wrote:I've been led to believe Hannukah is derived from non Hebrew written ancient Jewish texts. How does that hold within the teachings of the synagogues?

Hannukah translates as Dedication from Aramaic. It is widly misunderstood holliday in US. Even most secular American Jews do not know true meaning of this holliday. I't is not holliday celebrating temple oil burning for 8 days instead of 1 while they made new one, that is just an allegory for true story. It is celebration of Maccabees dedication to God and Israelites and will to fight "helenistic civilization" for freedom of people and religion. Dedication and will to fight unvinable war of untrained villagers agains mightiest empire for over 30 years. If you want to read story of Hannukah, read this book.

As far as how that hold within the teachings of the synagogues, i'm giving you "official" view of the subject

Interesting. I have a Jewish friend and his feelings on the Essenes are way different from what you just said, as well as The Dead Sea Scrolls. I find The Scrolls fascinating, and its interesting to see that group equated to a splinter cult versus a unique entity with Jewish roots.

In relation to Hanukkah, I'm curious because it's part of the Septuagint and moreso part of Catholicism than Judaism from Saint Jerome's translations, and yet it's the 'main' Jewish holiday promoted here in the US <probably in response to Christmas>.

Yes, I do understand. Just because you have a different opinion than me doesn't mean I don't understand. That's just silly to say something like that. I could say the same thing about you...

I am very comfortable as a Christian.

Lyion is a broken record stuck on "repeat." The only reason you are stuck in your beliefs Lyion, is because you were raised in Catholicism and you don't know any other way to think. It's been deeply ingrained in your head for years.

Like I said, I have stepped outside of my religion I was raised with. I studied other religions and Christian denominations and have formulated my opinions based on that research. You have not done so. You have clearly demonstrated that over and over again. You have the ability to do so, but I see no attempt whatsover. So, that pretty much leaves you in the "ignorant" category does it not?
