YAY! I got a legitimate adult table response!
I guess my issue with the law is that, these are people who get arrested for fighting dogs and are back on the streets after a little fine or a bit of jail time. Most of the time, they are ordered by law to not own dogs anymore, but they continue to get them and get in trouble. I guess I just see this as an issue of these people will not care about getting arrested and having a little slap on the wrist anyway, as soon as they get out they will just get another dog.
Also, I take considerable issue that several states that are thinking of banning the breed are not going to go about this in an ethical manner. It is just plain cruel to take someone's pet away from them and euthanize them. How do you explain to a child that the dog he has been growing up with is going to be taken away and put to sleep for no fault of the dog or the owner?
If a ban absolutely has to be enacted, then I think the government should pull their heads out of their asses long enough to do it responsibly. Require all people who already own pits to register the animal and have papers stating they owned the dog prior to the enactment of the law. Then when said dog passes away, proceed with the ban as normal with the family, they cannot get a new pitbull. If the person is too damn lazy to go have the proper paperwork done upon enactment than they lose their dog and its their own fault for not doing what they needed to.
I also am concerned about this law because I have seen how similar laws have played out in places like Germany. People have seen their dogs shot in front of them for no reason by police, some even had their dog burnt to death on their front lawn by police. Hell one woman who owned an akita (which was a breed required to have a muzzle on in public by the law that was passed), removed the dogs muzzle because the dog had started to vomit when she was walking it, and it was choking on its own vomit due to the muzzle. Upon taking the muzzle off to allow the dog to vomit, a police officer shot the dog as it stood leashed next to its owner, very obviously retching and vomiting. There was no confusion, the officer was simply being an ass an abusing the law. He saw the woman remove the muzzle and the dog vomit, and as it occured he pulled his gun and shot the dog to death. I am just cautious of laws such as breed bans and muzzle laws because often they have proven to be abused.
