I made it to Washington Square on my own many times when I was younger. My family had a system in case we wanted to split up and do things seperately. I never had an incident beyond my father & sister forgetting the time once & I waited an hour at our designated meetup spot (ticketbooth in Times Square).
This was in the early 90s prior to anybody in my family getting a cell phone. I memorized a few contact #s & I had an emergency contact # card that I carried with me.
I think my first solo adventure into NYC was when I was 12. I took the train down from Stamford on summer morning because I wanted to check out the central library.
