Insurance type advice

Postby Gypsiyee » Wed Jan 31, 2007 10:19 am

Ok.. so here's the situation.

I'm currently living with my ex, both our names are on the house, but I'm moving this month to Florida. I sold my own car because we only have a 2 car garage and we had no room to park the truck and 2 other cars.

Now that I'm moving, I'm signing the house over to him - it was all his down payment that went in the house and really we've only lived here a little over a year so I haven't put much money toward the house at all. He's going to give me the truck so that it's beneficial to both of us - I'm not having him pay me anything to buy me out of the house, but he's going to give me the vehicle so I can move easily without paying a huge fee to move all my shit (I really don't have that much to move, a car would move it easily, I have furniture where I'm moving, not here)

So, here's the question - he'll sign the truck title over to me, but currently we share insurance, I'm secondary under his. Now, I won't keep the truck since there's no need to have a 4wd in Florida where there's no snow.. so my thing is, do I trade it in up here and get my own insurance via a nationwide type of company (ie geico, allstate, etc) or drive the truck down there (though gas mileage for a 1200 mile drive would be hell) and he says he'll keep me on his insurance for the drive and then just drop me after that. For his sake I think I'd rather be on my own insurance (not to mention have my own more fuel efficient car for the drive), but I don't know what would be best.

Eh its really up to you. If you sell the truck, and purchase a car are you buying it outright, or taking on payments? If you are taking on payments, then you are required to have insurance before you drive it off the lot. So at that point, you can start your own insurance up, and he can drop you off of his. Either way its not a big hasle to start up insurance, as long as you can afford to pay the startup.

If you are worried about it, i would just get off of the insurance as soon as you can. That way there is one less string that *could* pose some problems down the line. Sooner the better imho.

well, I'm pretty positive the truck will be worth more than any car I get. KBB value is 6500 on trade-in, and I definitely don't need some new fancy car.

Then i would probably just kill 2 birds with one stone. Trade in the truck, and then switch insurances right then and there. Its really not that big of a hassle to start up insurance.

If you didnt start up insurance right there, then you would have to put the new car under his, drive it 1200 miles, get dropped from the insurance, and then start it up once you are there. Just get it done imho.

well the big question is get the new car now or in florida i guess. if i get the new car now, then i get the new insurance now. if i stick with the truck, i stay on his insurance until i get to florida.

i think i would rather get the new car here (partly because a new car is exciting =p) but if I do that what's the best way to go about it? Buy the new car under his insurance then drop it once I get the car off the lot and get my own? Plus whats the best insurance company that's a nationwide company, I've been on the local one with him since I've been on my own and before that obviously I was on my mom's - I don't even know what standard rates are anymore.

Remember, if you sign up for new insurance most of them want the first 2 months paid right away. So depending on your vehicle/driving record it could be a few hundred dollars. You're going to have to do it either way I guess. You can be insured in 30 minutes on the internet but buying a new car/trading one in can take a while. Whatever you do, don't pay for new insurance on the truck just to drive it down there. The companies won't roll over that payment you made onto another policy. Either use his insurance for the drive or get a completely new one with your new car.

Before you just pick one insurance company, get a quote with all of them. I had been with Progressive for 8 years when I got my new car this last October and they wanted a crazy amount to get my car insured. Instead I checked with Allstate, State Farm, Geico and Esurance. Esurance was a ton less money than all the rest so I went with them. Shop around a little.

If you need any advice on which cars you're looking at getting, send me a PM. You could probably get a lot better trade-in up north for your truck but a lot better car down in Florida because of the no snow thing. Did you consider selling it up north getting a u-haul and buying a car in Florida?

EDIT: It would be easiest to just get your own new insurance for your new car. They'll require you to get the VIN and everything anyways so why go through that hassle twice? If I were in your situation I'd drive the truck down south, trade it in and get a new car under your own insurance. MAKE SURE that before you leave, that the truck is titled entirely under your name or you will run into notary issues.

Tacks is right. Your truck will most likely be worth more up north, than down in Florida. Buy the car and switch insurances before you go is the best idea.

Tacks is also right in that you should deffinatly shop around for the insurance. I believe its Progressive that will actually show you their competitors rates for insurance on that specific car.

A uhaul is like 900 bucks, I checked with that and thats just too high. Yeah, i could get a much better trade in value with a truck up here which is the main thing, and cars aren't very expensive up here because most people want 4wd. Another thing is the gas, 17 miles to the gallon in the truck is kind of scary when I'm driving 1200 miles.

My driving record is spotless, I've only had one ticket which was total bullshit and reduced to a parking ticket charge because it was total bullshit and the cop knew it was total bullshit, so I have no points on my record and no accidents or anything. Whats a pretty typical 6 month premium, around 500..? I really don't know what to expect with that >.< I know about the having to pay 2 months usually up front, which shouldn't be a problem cuz that'll only be a couple hundred bucks I imagine

If she were looking to get a brand new car I would say do it up north but it sounds like she wants a $5000ish car and her trade-in is worth more than that. She's probably going to take a loss either way. Do you still have a lein on the truck or is it paid off? I'm not sure how you're expecting to do your trade-in if you want a car that is worth less than your trade-in. Like I said, you're most likely taking a loss either way.

It's paid off

I might end up just getting a bit newer of a car and get a small payment on it, that wouldn't be intimidating to me, I just don't want a huge debt on my hands when I'm starting new and have to find a new job etc. I mean yeah I want used, but I don't want old hoopdy used

For a mid-priced used car with a spotless record you can probably get it for like $75 a month depending on how much coverage you need.

Like I said, if you want help picking a car, let me know and I'll help.

Jacksonville at first, then probably orlando after a year or so. There's a really great film school that Jonathan wants to go to right outside orlando, so that's probably where we'll head. For a while though we'll just be staying with my dad in the mandarin area of jacksonville.

Either there or Pensacola, which ever base they send us to. Either way, it's still about a 4 hour drive :(

Ash, I'd recommend a Jetta or a Passat for you for both girlyness and fuel economy.
