I just got an email from a friend in Reno. If this is really true then my regard for humankind just took a major nosedive.

STRAY dogs are being skewered on hooks and dragged behind boats as live shark bait. The cruel practice takes place on French-controlled Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean. A six-month-old labrador pup was recently found ALIVE with a huge double hook through its snout, and another through a leg. The pup was found in a coastal creek and is thought to have somehow freed itself from a fishing line, but other dogs and kittens have been chomped up and swallowed by sharks.

I'd absolutely want to see confirmation of this first, but yeah, if people are doing it, it's reprehensible.

why is it reprehensble?

it's a stray dog

something no one wanted anyway

it's no different than using "normal" live bait

The closest I can bring myself to that is hooking a bluegill through the ass and using it as catfish bait~

The picture is photochopped, and the story, I'm sure, is bogus.

For one, the amount of drag created by towing a dog behind a moving boat through its upper lips like that would rip the hooks right through the skin. The leg, maybe...
To do it properly, you'd have to skewer the dog through its collar, ribcage, or hips. Plus... there is a distinct lack of blood and manglement. No way the holes in the snout would be that clean still.

Not that I doubt people would use dogs as bait, but this method is utter bullshit. I don't believe it.

People with compassion for animals, for one.

The difference between this and eating meat and swatting flies or what ever other ridiculous analogy you could come up with, is that this is the torture of these poor creatures.

If they were grafting skunks or rats or what ever other creature and stringing them across the ocean alive I would be just as mortified, but you can't blame people for caring for animals who show their emotions the way dogs do.

This story is appalling and if it doesn't make you cringe even a little bit you are a soulless robot.

no, you missed my first point

if it was something other than dogs, it wouldn't be newsworthy

I was replying to bigrozz's point about whether it was a fake, or a real story (ie, reaction to it as a fake or a real story is the same thing)

Maybe you should read my post again then chuckles because that's exactly what I'm talking about. It would be just as loathsome if it was any other animal.

Your ambivalence just either shows how cold hearted you are, or how you're just trying to look cool on internet.

I don't look at myself as being cold hearted and I would have less problems if it were mice, rats, or any rodent in general.

I'm sure the distaste also comes from any persons perception of what is a pet and what is not.

In Asia folks eat dogs and that is an acceptable practice but here for example I think it is against the law and even if not, socially it would be unacceptable.

you still lose you dumb shit

whether it's a real story, or a fake story, it doesn't change that people use live bait all the time(that's the who cares)

it also doesn't change that it's ONLY news because it's a dog, and not a skunk/rat/whatever

try again fagboat

People don't use live bait like this all the time, but if they did I would be equally outraged. But the real question is, why aren't you?

I first saw that picture about 5 years ago, I think.

I believe that's not a common occurence, and according to the snopes report that group does not use stray dogs anymore.

I think it's still wrong even if it was a rat or a skunk. That's just cruel, and torture to the animals.

It would still bother me, I don't think we are ethical in any way shape or form of our treatment of animals we consider to be lesser, ie: Skunks, Rats, etc.

I've always been of the belief that just because we have thumbs we don't have the right to torture and maim other animals for our gain.

So it would bother me.

Ok, accidental entanglement, I can believe.
