Should I do side work for my old boss..?

Postby Gypsiyee » Tue Sep 11, 2007 5:41 am

So.. as I posted a little while back, I got offered this new job with heaps more pay and as much as I loved the people I worked with, it would've been stupid to turn this job down at an 11k a year payraise with benefits when before I had none. My old boss was pretty devastated about it, we had a really good rapport and not to pat myself on the back or anything but he adored me.

So I just got an email from him, and he's pretty particular about his employees.. the new lady isn't working out apparently and he wants me to come in a few hours a day and work. I don't know how permanent it would be.

I'm leaning toward yes, even though I hated the actual job (ap/ar is *not* fun) and who doesn't like extra money, but I don't really want him to become dependant on me full stop because my priorities have to lie with this job.

I mean I get out of here at 2.30 (get here at 6) so yeah I have the time to spare. Obviously with immigration Jonathan can't work yet and extra money is always cool.. my thinking is that I really did love that boss and if I go back and help him he's a great point of reference for future endeavors and especially if my contract isn't renewed in x amount of years with the government job. I don't want to leave Scott out in the cold especially since he was such a great boss to have, my biggest concern being him becoming reliant on me and not being able to get out of it once I start. I mean I don't *need* 2 jobs, I'm making good money here; sure it'd be helpful to save up for a house to have extra money to sock away, but long term I don't want to be suckered into having 2 jobs when it's not necessary.

Its really up to you. If you have the extra time, why not make a little extra money, but I would let him know from the beginning that it isnt on a full time basis and when he can find someone else to take over, you will be gone, but would cover vacations, etc.

Just my 2cp.

I say go for it if you have the time- just make it clear that it's temporary and part time.

Make sure your contract work pay is good, and I'd say go for it.

Even if he pays me what my rate was when I left there I wouldn't be fussed with it - the work isn't hard and I know it like the back of my hand. If that job had the same package this job has I would work there full time, but they couldn't afford to match it because they're small.

Weren't you saying in another thread that you were having water for lunch because you were making money stretch? I would say, for the time being at least, that it might just be what you need, at just the right time :)

Just because your BF is going through immigration doesn't mean he can't work.

What the fuck does this have to do with the price of tea in china?

Gyp, business is business. Do not let personal thinking cloud the simple fact if you are contract working, you should at a minimum make what you are making now. Realistically, you should make 50% more since there are no benefits or long term incentives.

Be smart and get what you deserve.

What doesn't it have to do with it? If he worked even part time then she wouldn't have to work a second job. He can work while she's at work so they still get to spend all night together. Don't see the problem!

Actually.. it does. He cannot be legally employed.

Oh and to repeat myself, I don't "need" to work a second job at all; this would simply be a favor to my old boss as when I left I know I left him in a bind and he would have to find someone less than stellar in a short period of time, whereas he was able to interview many people before he hired me.

And yes Hylissa, but that wasn't because I'm broke, that's just pay period transitions =) I went from a weekly paycheck to being paid twice a month, and with the pay period here, it's a week and a half behind the hours you worked if that makes sense

Even if he did or does work, extra bucks for most people with little work, and spending time with good people seems a pretty good scenario.

In regards to spousal/partner types, maybe others should take Gyp's example and try an import. They seem to have better reliability, and price/performance than a lotta the domestic models.

Your guy can work under the table easily, Gyp. Especially in Florida. Heck, most of Florida already does.

Yeah, but in the (unlikely) event he gets caught doing it, it might negatively effect his chances of being allowed to stay full-time. I can see not wanting to do anything to jeopardize that.

Gyps, check with the BF too before you do it, as obviously it'll a) have you around home less, and b) have you a shitload more tired when you are there, so it is going to impact him. It's obviously not his decision, but if it's something that'd cause strain in the relationship, that would certainly be something for you to consider in your planning.

Right now he has money from his trust fund that he uses to pay for things and plays poker as income which brings in money as well, not that that's anyone's business. If you're implying that he should do side jobs illegally and potentially screw his immigration if he gets caught, well that's not a risk we're willing to take when I'm making perfectly good money and he has reserve money as well.

oh yeah Arlos, of course I'll check with him - I doubt he'll mind though as I told him when I left the company that it was a possibility he'd want me to come back, kind of knew the first day that the girl was a dunce. They haven't invoiced since I've been gone, and the position had me with 30 hours of downtime a week often times so I have no idea what the hell she's been doing.

No, because I play poker as well.. there's a regulated poker room that's perfectly legal here in st. john's county. It's a hobby, and it's something he can do legally that's profitable for now. He has money, poker is done purely as a game and sport. If he's profitable and makes money so what? Not like it's a career choice. What would you prefer he do, mow lawns and skirt around the law and risk getting kicked out of the country for evading immigration laws?

I'm not concerned with the legality of poker, but rather attempting to make a career of gambling seems like maybe not the best way to get ahead

uh, again.. it's not a career choice? it's something we started doing together since it's local here and participate for fun, he being much more efficient at it than I am and more often than not turning a profit. Again, *he cannot legally work at the moment.* This is something we knew from the getgo, and something we both planned for as a means to be together. We knew it would be ages before he could legally work. Would you like me to delve into details about the funds he's living off of from his trust fund or could your, however helpful, uneducated opinion cease in knowing that I'm perfectly capable of knowing the man I'm with much better than you do.

Again, thank you for your contribution Tikker, Taxx - I think you both great guys and great sources of information on a lot of topics, but in this subject you're both lacking in knowledge - poker is something we do for fun, plain and simple - it's not his source of primary income and it's by *my* decision that we play so often, because it's what I enjoy doing on the weekends. I work full time and I deserve to do what I wish on the weekends. it's not a career choice, if you've referenced the other thread you'll know that his degree is in sound engineering, in which he obviously cannot pursue a 40 hour week doing at the moment. He worked until the day before he got on the plane here, and secured funds otherwise so that while on his B-2 we would be financially secure. We just happen to be lucky and he's been able to turn profit playing poker as well, giving us a bit extra.

All that is a non issue however - this poll isn't based on a 'need' for a second job. If I do the second job it's soley to help my old boss out.

I have to agree with Tikker on this one. And what about getting a temporary work visa? Is that just impossible for him to get?
