Edible Spider Web?

Postby Ouchyfish » Thu Oct 25, 2007 4:55 pm

Is there a way to make a type of spider-web like stuff out of sugar etc? (IOW edible?) Doesn't have to be hollywood grade, but enough to spark a 5 year olds imagination =)

best way to do it i imagine would be with spun sugar, a la something similar to cotton candy

if you can't do that, just check out foodnetwork.com, they have a ton of halloween recipes going on right now that might be up that alley

You mean like cotton candy, but thicker strands?

Yeah-a lot like cotton candy only in threads, etc. I may end up just buying cotton candy and pulling it out as best I can. :dunno:

How large of a spider web do you want? It might be easier to just roll it than to pull it into strands.

Enough to cover a small area (12-16 sq feet)

there's a company, I think it's Charms, that comes out at halloween with a cotton candy specifically named spiderweb cotton candy because it's made to look like it - i don't know if it's only called that because it's white or not, but they do make it available at halloween.

If you want it to look like a real spiderweb/cobweb, your best bet will be the cotton candy.. otherwise like Jen said, go with licorice and make our cartoonized take on a spiderweb.

Create a simple syrup. i.e. sugar and water. fairly thick. like honey

spread out a piece of parchment paper and coat it with pam or a very light coating of peanut or grapeseed oil ( no flavor )

using a spoon create your spider web on the paper. ALLOW TO COOL. do not try and move it.

ideas: you can add food coloring to create different effects

Also you can trace out a web pattern on a seperate sheet of paper and put it under the partchment so you have a pattern to follow.

oops didnt see the size you need.
For you

At forge(10) you can get edible morning dew in SoD. It has a spider silk graphic.

Or.. get a bunch of mirrors or something, scoop a bunch of sugar in a plastic ziploc bag, cut out a small corner of the bag and draw a spiderweb on the mirrors (as if you're decorating a cake!) Assign each kid their own web and give them each a straw. Tell them the first to suck up and eat all the sugar wins teh prize!!! (which could be something like a fake spider or something! Fun!) Do this towards the end of the Halloween party before the kids go home.
