Man Pays Speeding Ticket in Pennies
By Associated Press
Wed Aug 3, 4:07 PM

MOORHEAD, Minn. - A man ticketed for speeding thought he'd get even by paying his fine with 12,000 pennies. But the judge had the final word by making him wait for the change to be counted.

"If the person is mad at the cop, why take it out on court administration?" said Clay County District Judge John Pearson. "They're punishing the wrong people."

Rather than count the small garbage can full of pennies by hand, Court Administrator Jan Cosette took them to the bank, where they were put in a counting machine. She returned with $120 in cash and some extra pennies, which were given to the Seattle man, who waited in the courthouse.

He was cited for driving 70 mph in a 55 mph zone March 5.

Not the judicial systems... its the legislative side he should be mad at since they are the ones who make up the laws.

Being as there is nothign in the world that person could do to voice his anger at the cop, I would say he took it out on the right people. When you watch a car go flying past at over 90 weaving in and out of traffic and the cop pulls over the guy doing 5 over the speedlimit because it was easier, it make syou want to do something like that.

I got pulled over about 9 months ago, I was in the left lane of a 1 way street and the cop was standing on the side of the road, We had just left a 55zone and it immediately became a 25zone, he stood right after the change. I was still about 20 over when I hit the sign however the peopel in the center and right lane were passing me like I was standing still. The cop pulls me over, not the people passing me. HE then procedes to tell me he is ust giving me a written warning. About 8 months later, I try and get my address changed at the DMV and they tell me I have a failure to appear at court flag on my licence. I call the courhouse (took about 40 calls to get throguh) and they tell me that the "Warning" was actually a ticket and that I skipped out on court and now there is a warrent for my arrest. So now I have to pay the full fine just to get a court date where not only do I have to argue the damn ticket, but have to explain why I skipped out on court. This is of course, if I can get a court date before some other idiot cop decides to pull me over for whatever reason and arrest me.

Doesn't make sense to me either, Fin.

If I speed, and get caught I'm not gonna be mad at the fact that I now have to pay for it. Don't want to pay a speeding ticket? Don't speed. Simple.

I'll accept a ticket from a human. But in California there's cameras on top of stoplights all over, and the ticket is well over $200. That's just not right.

We only have a few of those around here, thankfully. I'm not sure I'm too happy with the idea of being on video in even MORE places then I already am.

Big Brother is watching.

I've heard of a chip in new cars that records your top speed with time/date stamps. Anyone else hear if this is true?

I am in the process (will finish tomorrow) of installing GPS devices into many county vehicles that transmit that exact data in real time back to a central point, in our case the main office for our solid waste department. We are using it for two purposes. 1.) to make sure that our solid waste drivers are not taking two hour lunchs, driving around town on the county dime (we call them parishes, but it is the same thing), and other misuse of county vehicles and gasoline and 2.) to combat complaints with verifyable data, ie "The garbage truck was speeding down my street", "umm no maam, we are looking at his data right now and he is currently driving 5mph less than the speed limit, at the time he passed your house he was driving 7 mph below the speed limit" If this little experiment works out we will be able to tell exactly where and when and how fast a county employee was driving at any given time.

Yes these devices do exist, but to the best of my knowledge they are not being put into cars yet unless specifically asked for or installed by the owner. Welcome to 1984! Big Brother is watching.

FYI the devices cost about $800 a piece and the software to compile the data is around $5K

you should talk to a cop someday.. You are breaking the law no matter what you are doing. I have cop buddies that have told me that. The law is written in such a way that the government can control you if the need arises and the easiest way to do that is through the police force and the *justice* system.

That's not so far from the truth. Sit down and read your state statutes some time. Well, not all of them unless you have bible like patience, but page through it. They can put the screws to you for anything at any time, because nearly every enforcable action is dictated by the officers judgment.

On one hand, decent cops don't hassle you over stupid petty shit, like carrying a pocket knife that the statute considers a "switchblade or automatic knife" just because you can open it with one hand.

On the other, they can ruin your fucking month with the opposite. Whether or not you "did" anything doesn't matter. Just whether or not a cop wants to do something about you.

Only complete dumbasses go to jail. If you get arrested it's your own damn fault... not "the system's." And furthermore, it takes a lot to get yourself arrested and thrown in jail.

When I finished installing the GPS tracking devices on the trucks today so that the head of the solid waste department could make sure that his drivers weren't taking two hour lunches he took me out to a two hour lunch, I had to laugh.

I got caught growing pot. I deserved to go to get arrested and go to jail. I knew the consequences. IMO the cops were complete asses about it - much more than they needed to be. In the end they didn't even arrest me. I was never read my rights as I was only detained as they took the plants away. Nothing ever came of it.

I'd say that what cops can do is completely up to them. I'm glad that they had the option not to arrest me, but I don't think that they SHOULD have that option as long as it's against the law to grow pot (I'm for legalization btw).

My boss has his beamer equipped with a device that scrambles the radar reading. And it's legal in Ohio.
