Dying in WoW....

Postby Sirens » Fri Dec 03, 2004 3:49 am

Dying in World of Warcraft is about as noninvasive as it can be, short of having a dialog box that says "Do you want to die?" with "yes" and "no" buttons.

That is the definition of trolling Sirens. None of us are stupid enough to not realize the intent of your post.

Everyone that played EQ can attest to this fact. Dying SUCKED. It was a huge time sink, everyone complained about loosing EXP, and the time it took to get back to your corpse, naked. WoW came along and improved on this, and now people complain.

Do you really think we are that stupid Sirens? Its more than obvious that you were trolling, as creative and smart as you may think it was.

I'm somewhat on the fence here. While I hate timesinks for no reason, I also have an issue with death being meaningless in a big community MMO.

I like a bit of danger in adventuring, and risk for the reward.

Hmm, good point. However will money be an issue as one approaches the endgame?

I'm only in my teens, but I rarely die, unless I get an add in a close fight. My 40 Paladin in beta almost never died.

Dying to me is a lot like "Fuck off there goes 2 minutes to run back to my corpse and get no experience penalty. I sure do hope I don't do this 10 more time or else I might have to spend a few silver!"

yes, because the higher you get in game, the more it costs for you to fix your durability. At level 42 in beta, I would wait until most of my armor was yellow, and then fix and it was costing me sometimes as much as 10 gold.

the death penalty in wow just gives me more incentive to challenge myself more, thus having more fun and getting better rewards, loot and exp

I generally go through 50 silver to 1 gold a night from deaths. I blame Vonkaar and Pacemaker for sucking and letting me die, not my fantastic job of pulling 4+ mobs a pull.

Sirens, that was in fact trolling, otherwise you wouldn't have had two posts this morning. Since Taxx is gone on "sabatical" this week, shut the fuck up you stupid mother fucker.

That sucks bad. I don't care if you are level 60, 10 gold is a lot of cash.

Dying in an instance is doubly annoying, especially if there's respawn between the entrance and where you died. You either get a rez, zone back in and get a warlock to summon you, or you're done. If you're 2 hours into an instance, being forced to be done is certainly a penalty.

I thought you were saying, "I'll run back to my corpse to avoid the exp penalty."

Nah I mean no experience penalty is kind of weak shit. I don't even care if I die in this game.

If you have to use shaman reincarnation, you'll find that there is definitely a penalty for death... cash as well as rez sickness that renders you totally incapable of defending yourself from a MOB 10 levels lower than you.

Try reincarnating into a battle where you are the only rezzer, only healer, and there are still 5 MOBs in camp.... did it last night. Twice.

Instancing and the way it handles deaths and corpses is much different than running around in the xroads and dieing...

Well, I say one thing I think WoW has right is this... in EQ 2 if a member of your group dies EVERYONE shares in the exp loss, which I think is retarded. Why the hell should I have to pay for someone else's screw up (well - you know what I mean). So, I have to give WoW credit for that much.

LOL Diek, I still get scared when I see people die in group in WoW, I think the shared exp debt from playing EQ2 beta has scarred me for life.
