time to quit denying it

Postby brinstar » Tue Mar 01, 2005 1:39 am

i'm not 19 anymore, i'm almost 25-- and my metabolism can't keep up with my diet anymore. i'm 6'4" and when i moved to lincoln 6 years ago i was 175 lbs. now i realize that 175 at 6'4" is wafer-thin, but i am now up to 214 and i am no longer happy with the way my pants fit (aside from the usual "not enough room in the crotch" problem i've had since age 14). i'd rather be 190 again. 24 pounds need to go.

as obvious a concept as "burn more calories per day than you eat" sounds, it is a concept i have yet to master. my ankle is now sufficiently healed from when i sprained it last year, so once winter finally breaks i plan on getting some real exercise-- most likely on my bike. i don't have weights, i don't have one of those fancy exercise balls, and i can't afford anything other than what i already have.

furthermore, i know that exercise is only half the equation-- i must change my diet. six years ago i could get by eating nothing but pasta and pepsi and skittles and still never gain a pound, but those days are gone.

so mr. cyni mophopper, i need some firm yet lenient guidelines on what kind of stuff i should be eating, and it must fit in my minimalist budget. aside from that, i need some sort of exercise schedule to complement said change in diet. i picked up a random factoid the other day which says to lose a pound of fat per week, you must burn 3500 more calories than you take in per week. that's only 500 a day, and at that rate i could be 200 by june, and hit my target sometime in august.

help me, obi-mop kenobi! you're my only hope!

What types of foods do you like eating? And what type of schedule do you have?

alex ride your bike to work when it's nice out. that'll burn hella calories.

also: mom has a membership to sam's club, once or twice a month have her buy you some healthy food in bulk. they actually have pretty good meat there; she got me a big ol' package of kielbasa once that i worked on for a couplea weeks.

also again: get up in time to eat a healthy breakfast--smeggs, bacon, toast, OJ, what-have-you. that'll start you off on the right foot and you won't be as hungry later in the day.

one more also: don't eat late at night!

One big thing that will help is drinking all water. Don't drink any soda at all, just drink water. This helps a ton. Drinking OJ in the morning is cool and drinking low-fat or skim milk is good too for the protein.

Also, make sure you get a good breakfast as it is the most important meal of the day. If you eat a right breakfast, you shouldn't over-eat later in the day and you will burn up the carbs and cals you intake from breakfast easier. Try to eat a balanced breakfast, i.e. 1 or 2 bread servings (cereal, with 5g of sugar per serving or less and low fat milk, bagels, english muffins, low fat yogurts, etc.), 1 fruit and 1 dairy. You need to intake lots of carbs in the morning to give you energy for when you work-out or whatever later in the day.

Just to give you an example...2 english muffins with low fat jam (strawberry :balloons: ), a glass or milk or OJ, and some freshly cut blueberrires. Mmmm.

I'm 6' and 185. I'm not to fat or too thin, but 6'4" and 190 is way too thin bro.

I suggest lowering your standards, getting laid by a semi-fat chick. Then, with that ego boost, parlay it into a thinner girl. Problem solved. Oh, and eat blueberries.

Confused your height with Labbats'

The other post still applies, it depends on how your body carries it.

i agree and i dislike how my body is currently carrying what i perceive to be extra weight

i hide it from people very well, when i tell someone that i am planning to lose 20 lbs their reactions range from confusion to indignance because i don't *look* 214

i can't hide it from myself though and i am the only person who needs to be at peace with the dimensions of my body

My weight traveled straight to my boobs. That makes me really sad because I am even more unproportionate (oh lord thats not right, is it?).

Keep in mind too that it's not always a "slower metabolism" that gets us when we age. Yeah, when you're talking jumping from 20 to 40, but for the most part - it's because a 29 year old isn't as physically active as they were when they were 19.

A lot of people don't realize that. Yes, what you eat is VERY important - but don't blame your metabolism... you're not that old yet.
