WTF?

Postby veeneedefeesh » Sat May 07, 2005 10:46 pm

I got a couple questions that have really been bothering me the last few weeks.

1.) What the fuck is up with all the grunting and hollering that people do at the gym? There was this guy the other day, a real mutant if you know what I mean, no neck at all and his arms were about the size of my leg and every time he lifts anything there is this loud "UUUUGGHH!!!" I figured the guy was lifting one crapload of weight and was really giving it his all, kinda like a Ki in martial arts, but then I happen to be near him later and realize that he is using less weight than I am and he is taking longer breaks between sets than I am and I dont even think he was doin as many reps as I was. Now maybe he had been there working out for several hours before I got there or something, but I am pretty sure he came in after I started so I dont think it was fatigue. I know he wasnt there at the same time that week because I was there every day and I owuld have noticed him. WTF if you would look at this guy you would think he would be curling my body weight but instead he is hollering like a little bitch over 25lb curls. How the hell did he get arms like that lifting 25lb at a time? Is it just a ploy for attention that he hollers like that? WTF?

2.) What the fuck is up with the posturing in the mirrors? I can understand watching yourself doing an excersize to make sure that you are doing it properly, but are facial expressions part of working out? I was watching this guy lift the other day (I learn by watching others) and I felt like I was awatching Jim Morrison or some shit. he is making these overdramatic faces at himself and making goo-goo eyes in the mirror to the point that I had to look away because it was embarrassing.

People are truly strange, and gym-rats seem to be an especially strange bunch of folks.

The grunting is for attention - I am sure of it.

I posted something about this topic in another thread.

There's always a pack of three or four idiots who lift together. They always walk in and the gather around some bench or machine then take their time in between sets to chat. During the sets they scream and grunt at what's almost a yell. It's funny actually. One idiot was on the bench with something like a gazillion pounds on the bar and another was spotting him. The spotter kept shouting "BIG CHEST!! BIG CHEST!!!" I sware half the gym was going to burst out laughing at the fools.

As for posing in the mirror... I don't see a lot of that... haven't really seen much of it in the past either. I will admit that when I am at the gym I'll stand in front of the mirror to sort of gage myself and decide what body part I need to work on to keep in proportion.

Well, I take that back... there is a certain type of nutjob that does spend a lot of time looking in the mirror. BUT, it's not the mutant looking muscle heads... it's the wirery scrawny nerds dressed in 200 dollars workout suits... I see these guys doing everything (like curls) while watching themselves in the mirror... it also makes me LOL.

But, yeah... to answer your question - they're just trying to get attention. I think they think it some how impresses the women... little do they know - the women don't care. In fact... little do they know... women aren't into huge guys anymore.

dieken is right they all do it for attention. You should work in the gym this is what I see on a regular basis:

-Lamar (ya a white guy lol) walking in to the group x room while a a class is going on and yelling BITCHES THAT LIFT WEIGHT, nothing sexier~

-guys sitting around but neeeekkkid for hours

- Guys oiling themself up before a work out ( really if your gym is at aalll dirty go to a different one"

- the same guy doing the exact same work out going on 2+ years that I have known him.

there are many more but seriously a gym is like where all OCD comes out in everyone and it is very bizzare

When I was into power-lifting a couple years ago, we used to "grunt" as we were throwing those weights up. It seemed to help add a little "power" to the pushing upward of weights on the bench press. Think of it as being similar to a "keeyop" in martial arts. That inner concentration and outward "grunt" or "keeyop" helps drive and deliver what you're trying to accomplish at that moment. It actually has nothing to do with trying to get attention or show off or anything like that.

yea but if you gotta Keeyop when you are curling 25lbs then either you are a scrawny little thing with no strength at all or something is seriously the matter with you.

Thanks for the answers guys, I was wondering. I am always thinking that I must be doing something wrong. I saw a personal trainer (that is a story in itself) and decided that he was an oxygen thief so I am still trying to figure this stuff out on my own. I am afraid that I may hurt something, or not do the excersizes right and end up wasting my time. I was just making sure that there was no isometric counterbalance of the opposing muscles or some crap that I was missing out on.

Also I have to laugh about this as well, it is probably gonna get me pummeled in the parking lot one day, because every time I see some of these guys doing this I almost cant control my laughter. There is this one machine that has 2 pulleys that are spread apart over the subject's head, and if you grab them both you can pull them down to the waist and I guess it works the chest and arm muscles, but several of the mutants that do this (again with very little actual weight) insist on putting their knees together, and going into kind of a half squat which pokes their asses out in a sort of "come hither" kind of way (seriously if a woman did this in front of me I would have no doubt whatsoever what she was looking for) they look ssoooo goddamn ghey. every time I see one of them do it I have to turn away because there is an almost overpowering urge to laugh and point and say "Look Maw it's one of them thar faggits"

This thread makes me laugh Sometimes at work if I'm lifting something heavy, I'll throw out a grunt that almost sounds orgasmic to make my male coworkers blush, and we laugh about it and try to outgrunt eachother.

In fact... little do they know... women aren't into huge guys anymore.

So true :)
