That sucks! I take it there is no warrenty left? If the car is in good physical shape (body panels, seats, windows, etc...) you can sell the parts and make up some of the loss. This is one example where the sum of the parts are worth more than the whole. Why not have Dana buy the car? Is his credit shot as well?

Civic >>> all. You can get one with high milage and still get many more miles out of it ..... as long as you change the oil.
The object of life is not to arrive safely at the grave in a well preserved body, but rather to come screaching in to the grave sidelong in a beatup wreck of a body, loudly proclaiming "WOW What a ride!"

That is an incredibly sweet offer. Does is say shag waggon on the plates? Dana wants to know. I'm working out a deal with the toyota dealer. My pay off will get rolled into another loan and I'll probably get a used toyota corolla that is in better shape. He said he would probably take 500 - 1000 for it. He wants me to put 2k down which luckily I can do. Lord knows what kind of interest rate I am going to get. Probably something insane like 16%-17%. I just pulled my credit record and scores the last week and was starting to clean up the BS on it. I was able to tell him what they were on the phone immediately. He said don't worry - we can do something. I'm probably the ideal customer right now. They can charge me for my first born.

I'd by the honda civic in heartbeat but it just seems to make sense to deal with this dealer and I do love Toyota's too. They already have the car, they understand the situation, and they can turn around a deal pretty fast I'm sure. I don't have time to screw around. I need a working vehicle in my hands ideally within the next 48 hours. I'm just going to probably have a payment for a corolla that would be the same as if I was paying on a BMW if my credit was already cleaned up.

Ohh.. you should have donated it before the 31st - could have been a nice tax write off. Guess you will have it for this year. It's ok - give it to charity. Too crazy for me to get over to you now anyway. Would just add to the complexity of the situation. Thanks again for being so incredibly generous.

I was just running the numbers on a Corolla automatic speed via the toyota website http://www.toyota.com . I can actually do new and keep my car payment under 500/mo for 60-72 months.. just under including the other 6200 rolled into it that I owe for the original car that is trashed. That is if he takes my old car for 1000 as trade-in and with 2k down like he said he might.

Someone get me a barf bag... Am I nuts to consider buying a new car at that insane interest rate? Do you think I should just go used and then when my credit is cleaned up in a year try to do a trade-in with the used? It is possible I could pay off the new car at a faster rate too by dropping a chunk of tax return money on it in another few weeks.

Someone with some financial sense on cars.. help!

Worse case scenario with my current credit score I am looking at 16 - 17% interest. Budget wise I really could handle shelling out 400-500/month for the car if needed over 60-72 months. Ideally I would want to keep 350-400 though.

I need someone to come shop with me today.. I hate car buying.

If I were in your situation, I would not roll that kind of money into a new car loan, burying myself further in debt.

If I could afford 500 a month for payments and had 2k in cash, I'd be looking for a car I could buy for under 2k. Then work on paying off the debt on the busted up car with the 500 a month.

Within a year, the old loan should be paid off and have a car thats probably still worth around 2k to either sell, or trade in.

But thats just me. I dont like debt.

I agree with Kill. There's lots of dependable cars under 2k.
Inside each person lives two wolves. One is loyal, kind, respectful, humble and open to the mystery of life. The other is greedy, jealous, hateful, afraid and blind to the wonders of life. They are in battle for your spirit. The one who wins is the one you feed.

Well, paying off her car loan completely regularly will go a good ways towards helping her rebuild the credit rating, if done on top of paying down the other stuff.

Stayce, you probably don't want to buy new unless it's a car you're sure you're gonna want to hang on to and use for the next 10+ years. The drop-off in value for a new car the instant you drive it off the lot is rather large.

Bet if you looked, you could find a 3-4 year old much nicer model than a Corolla as well. Hell, you probably could GET a BMW, used, for the price of the Corolla. (Or Lexus, I guess, since I'm pretty sure they're the luxury arm of Toyota, and you're going through a Toyota dealership). Or, just get a 3-4 year old Corolla and pay half as much as you would for a new one.

Buy $1000 cars until your credit is back in shape. I am going to sell my car in a month or so for $1000. It's still got a good 50-100K miles left in it and I know there are many, many cars out there that are the same.

go get a lease on a Mazda 3, Scion Tc, Nissan Altima for 3 years. You shouldn't pay much more than 300 a month even with shit credit. Save the money it would cost to you buy and pay off bills/invest/unfuck credit score, then go buy down the road.

thats actually not a bad idea either. Take the 2k down payment, spend 35 cents on an Auto Trader from 7-11 and get an old honda.

Done.

1) In order to roll in that loan from the original car I can't lease from this dealer. They will only do it with a loan.

2)I want the dealer to take the original car off my hands that is sitting in his service shop so I don't need to tow it somewhere else. Again, there is also a time restraint here.

3) I need to buy this car today and I need it delivered to me this afternoon or at the latest tomorrow. Otherwise I am looking and having to go get a rental and that is more wasted money. Bad enough I have to blow 30 bucks on another cab to get to the dealer today. I'm sure they will give me a ride home though.

So the used or new will come off his lot. The only decision is do I buy used from him or new from him. I'm leaning towards used because as you pointed out I could get something lightly used and a little nicer. I highly doubt he has anything for 2k on that lot. Used I'm probably looking at 5 - 12k. New I'm looking at 14 - 18k.

Arlos made a really good point. I want to keep this toyota loan going for the fact that it has been establishing me better credit. We want to also buy a house in the next year or so and I have 2yrs already of perfect payment history with Toyota.
Once I get the other crapola off my record I should be in shape in another few months.

Tuggan - You have a great point! I already have two bikes ;) Problem is Baltimore isn't a very bike friendly city or I would actually consider using a bike for transportation locally. It is our only car though so we need it to visit the family in NJ, weekend trips, shopping, etc. Plus it isn't the best time of year for bikes. Dana actually use to bike into Baltimore when he was working at the gym.
I learned my lesson on the oil issue. I will get it checked every 3k for the rest of my life.

If I were you I'd seriously look into that Hyundai at least until you get your loan down to a reasonable level. If not then http://www.billkiddstoyota.com/Preowned-Inventory.aspx?InventoryId=8288514

edit: i guess thats a manual. are you totally against getting a manual?

Oooh what about here? http://www.billkiddstoyota.com/Specials-Preowned.aspx The Nissan Se-R is a VERY good price and is their high end special edition of the Sentra. If not that one, there is a 99 Camry with leather on there...seems like a good price. If you want sporty then the black Celica up in the top left is decent.
