Priest tips

Postby The Kizzy » Thu Jan 12, 2006 10:32 am

So I acquired a level 60 priest last night. Old friend had retired a few months back, gave him a ring to start playing again, he said hell no, he gave me the account info.

I play a mage, and I play her very well. Just curious if any of the other priests who play here (IF, Darcler) can give me some pointers.

I did a ZF run with some level 45's last night, and did pretty well, kept everyone alive on the stairs. Anyway, couldnt figure out how to use Mind Control, and everyone kept telling me to use something when I got aggro. Basically a bunch of twinks trying to teach me.

So........make me a good priest please. Shes Holy/Disc specced

When you use fade it takes you off agro and lowers all other agro done for the next 30 seconds (IIRC).

In raids, use it the second you get agro or on a big pull use it right before you heal.

just time your big heals so they land and you don't waste much mana. Bigger heals mean better mana/hp ratio (although not much) and less total agro so you should use em as much as possible.

I never really used MC much, but I've seen people use it effectively in instances and such.

Also, rezz people when they die. They like it when you do that.

They like it better whe they dont die at all
The object of life is not to arrive safely at the grave in a well preserved body, but rather to come screaching in to the grave sidelong in a beatup wreck of a body, loudly proclaiming "WOW What a ride!"

Generally, the only time I would expect a priest to use mind control in an instance is when they're not the primary healer, and the party is in dire need of crowd control. Generally, you'll be better off functioning as a healer.

When you do use MC, keep in mind that every time you get hit, you lose a chunk of time from the MC. Try and ensure you're not going to draw aggro on yourself during the charm.

Oh, MC can definitely be useful, even for PvE, it's should just be restricted to fewer situations than some priests like to employ it in.

So what you are saying essentially is that my job first and foremost is to heal, and that is what I shjould be sticking to.

If you are the priest in the group, odds are you are the primary healer and that's your first job unless you have some good shaman/druid doing it for you, which I don't see often unless you were shadow spec'd.

MC is very effective when used properly. I've been sole cc for DM and Strat live side. It all depends on knowing when to use it. It works very well when you mc a healer and then just keep doing your job while keeping that mob occupied.

Fade is very big, as stated above, it will save your behind as often as shield.

And big heals though ideal, due to cast time, least for me aren't used very often...too much can happen during the endless cast time. I usually use flash heals, hots, and shields.

MC can be very useful in certain places. I've 3-manned (personed?) live Strath with Syrena MC'ing mobs and me tanking

I try and use G heals mostly when I heal, freaked Slynoble to no end.

"Why do you wait for me to ALMOST be dead before you heal!?!!"

My response was always, "Did you die?"

I'm sure things are different in BWL and such. Biggest I ever healed was Luci (1st Ixtlan MC kill). They won because of me.

Shackle is like sheep but undead instead of humanoids etc. You cast it on an undead mob, it forms a box looking thing of chains and the mob stays put.

I costs like 0 mana so try and keep it cast on mobs if you have a second between heals.

I'd cast it every 15 seconds or so, just to be on the safe side. Try and shackle on pulls too. Helps so people don't break you CC all the time (Visionz).

Flash Heal and Greater Heal are pretty much personal preference. If the tank has decent gear in 5 man instances you can easily use G Heal. In pretty much any raid instance it's stupid to use greater heal.

1 gheal= 960 mana for 2535 healing 4s cast

3 flash heals= 1140 mana for 2655 healing 4.5s total casting

The problem is that usually other people in your group are getting hurt at the same time so theres a good chance after your 4s cast you won't have enough time to throw out another flash heal in time. It's situational but 9 times out of 10 you're going to be using flash heal, especially when you get better gear. The more +healing gear you get the more beneficial Flash becomes especially when you can use a lower rank flash heal and still get the benefit of the same amount of HP healed.

Not exactly. The "up to" condition on plus healing gear takes into account the speed of the heal, so the slower the heal, the more you get out of the item. But it doesn't really make that much diff.

The only real advantage to G heal is IMO the aggro. Two flash heals seems to cause more agro than one G heal. In a pick up group/instance if you use g heals you'll never need to fade (with a good tank IE me).

All of the old +healing or +damage gear worked the same way, with the bonus dependant on casting time, number of targets, etc., regardless of whether it had the "up to" explicitly listed on it. I can't speak to any new raid gear though.

I only skimmed the responses here, but here is how I play and what some things do.
Say we're in Strat. Multi mob pull. I'll shackle one incoming. That will keep the mob still, like a root.
If I have a good tank I'll keep him/her alive with Greater Heal. Everyone else gets Flash Heals. AE'rs get shield on large pulls of small mobs. Might even want to shield your puller to save you some effort.
If you see a mob or two heading your way, hit Fade. You will learn to LOVE Fade.
I, personally, never use MC on raids. But its a really fun spell that I'll play with when I duo with someone.

P.S. Taxx, I got 60 last night. Now you can get off my back :)
