homemade liquor recipes

Postby brinstar » Fri Feb 24, 2006 5:08 pm

hey guys

for christmas this year my mom gave me my grandma's original recipe card for kahlua and a half jug to start with

i've made a few batches so far, tweaking the recipe a little every time, and this last batch is the best. i was talking about it to someone in WoW the other night and she offered to give me her recipe for irish creme in exchange for my kahlua recipe

i just did up a batch of irish creme and it is tasty! so i got to thinking, i bet there are more liquors (or liqueurs) i could make, so here's the recipe i used for this awesome batch of kahlua. post any recipes you have!

Brinstar's Kahlua from Space!

ingredients:

15 teaspoons instant coffee crystals
6 cups water
5 cups white sugar
2 tablespoons real vanilla extract (not that imitation bullshit!)
6 cups vodka

step 1: in a medium saucepan, bring water barely to a boil. stir in sugar and coffee crystals until completely dissolved. reduce heat to simmer.

step 2: simmer 1 hour, stirring occasionally.

step 3: remove from heat and allow to cool.

step 4: mix in vodka and vanilla, stir thoroughly

step 5: bottle it up! enjoy with vodka and half & half for a tasty white russian

NOTES:

  • the original recipe on the card only makes 2/3 of a half gallon jug. usually i multiply the recipe by 1.5x, so i have enough to fill the jug and get a good couple of drinks to boot. the ingredients above reflect the recipe AFTER multiplying by 1.5x.
  • i recommend purchasing a 1.75L bottle of vodka for this task. that way when you are done with the recipe you still have a decent amount of vodka for mixing.
  • use your favorite brand of vodka. if you are a cheapskate, go with the mccormick or barton brands (shame on you!). smirnoff is okay, but this last batch i used Boru vodka, which is an irish brand. it seems to be much smoother than smirnoff. i haven't tried any of the top-shelf vodkas yet, so if you do, post here with results!
  • i've heard that you should "age" it for two weeks before having any, it's supposed to be better that way... but i'm not patient enough.
  • tweak the recipe to your own preference.

enjoy! and post your results!

That sounds very good.

Take 2 gallons of water, add 1/2 lb of sugar, 1 pack of yeast, all the gem you find at home(if it got sugar on top from age it's alot beter), bunch of smashed berries. Close the jar and leave in warmest place you got for 1 to 2 weeks. Open in 2 weeks and see if it smells like new wine(if it doesn't leave for another week). Take all the liquid, and run it through the Water Distiling Unit twice, and you should have a bach of a fine, 60 proof MoonShine.

Ok, geek post inc~

I have 2 to share. My buddy is responsible for the Romulan Ale (which I don't care for much as peppermint schnapps tastes like drinking toothpaste to me), and he has his own version of the blood wine, but I can't stand the taste of tequila mixed with any other hard liquor.

My version of Klingon Blood Wine =

1 shot Chambord
2 shots of Bacardi 151 (light or dark to taste - doesn't matter - I prefer Capt Morgan's Spiced Rum personally)
1 dash grenadine
1 shot of hawaiian punch syrup (the concentrate) or frozen cranberry juice cocktail concentrate, undiluted
Blackberry wine

Mix everything into a tall shaker, fill with enough wine to make enough for 2 glasses. Fill the rest of the way with ice.
Shake a few times until chilled (just enough to bruise the wine a bit) and pour into glasses.
It's super duper sweet with a punch, with enough smoothness to just sip. I would not recommend more than a glass or 2 a person though. It is meant as a cocktail for toasts or with dessert (I've got a recipe for Rokeg Blood Pie that goes rather nicely with it ;) )

My buddy's recipe for Romulan Ale (it's really simple, but burns like hell going down).

1 part Blue Label Smirnoff (NOT red)
1 part Avalanche
(opt. 1 part Sprite)

Homemade Amaretto Liqueur Recipe
INGREDIENTS:

2 cups sugar
2 cups water
2 cups vodka
2 cups brandy
4 tsp almond extract (not flavoring)
PREPARATION:

In a heavy saucepan, bring sugar and 2 cups water to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes to make a simple syrup. Cool to room temperature.

Add the vodka, brandy, and almond extract to the cooled syrup.
Stir to combine. Pour into stoppered bottles and let your homemade amaretto age at least 1 month.
