anyone here do it?

I'm looking at buying a travel trailer this summer, or next, and I'm looking for some thoughts about a couple trailers

Basic tent trailer

Slightly ritzier tent trailer (fold outs)

or possibly a hybrid cabin trailer with pull beds

My pull vehicle is a Jeep Liberty, so i really want to keep a trailer to under 21', weight wise 500ish tongue and 4k tow weight

I tend to prefer roughing it camping, as opposed to pulling a hotel room on wheels type camping

tent trailers own because of their size, and ease of pull

the hybrid seems to have all the benefits of both cabin and tent trailers, but are a bit on the pricey side

Tikker... I camp like crazy... by that I mean, in the nude.

Actually... I've not done the RV thing in a long time... but I used to own a pop-up trailer that I loved. They weigh almost nothing, they are the most aerodynamic (low profile) so they don't kill your gas mileage like most trailers... and they are often way roomy when you open them up. You can usually find them on craigslist for super cheap, like.. $500 even.

I'd go with the tent-trailer Tikker. You can even put a small boat on top of it for fishing if you're going to be near a lake. I grew up taking camping vacations. We had a Komfort trailer which was pretty nice, then we had a Class C motorhome, and then a class A. My parents now have a new Dynasty by Monaco. Talk about a nice RV... woah. They're going to Yellowstone and the Tetons in a couple months for a few weeks. Anyway, I love those popup tent trailers. I just went to an RV show a few weeks ago at Cal Expo in Sacramento, and the new tent trailers are the shiz. The one I looked at had 2 queen sized beds, another sofa/bed, a sink, oven, stove, fridge, toilet, air conditioning (lol) and an outdoor shower system. It was like $14k on special at the RV show. Man, that was tempting. They claim a 10-minute setup time, and that includes leveling.

Yup, exactly what I'm thinking, although I can also carry the canoe on top of the jeep

I'm looking at something like that, without the AC and toilet

i camp every weekend in the summer, both just plain tent camping and camping on my boat. Most of the time I just leave either of them set up during the way and get up get up extra early the next morning and drive to work. Pop out campers are fun to have because they are so easy to get around and set up, big campers tend to be a pain in the ass and require so much bigger of a vehicle for towing its a pain in the ass.

We had a smaller camper like the one Mindia described with a bed or two, portable stovetops, stuff like that, and it was fun as hell to have around. I prefer being away from the campgrounds tho that have electric hookups and all that, it filters out the chance of having a loud ass family beside you with 300 screaming kids running around riding bikes and playing and stuff.

What kind of camping are you wanting to do? Tons of campgrounds around here in WV everywhere you look, but theres also spots you can easily find that people dont know of and are nice and quiet.

My parents go Rv'ing during the summers a lot. They own a scamp trailer. They are very lightweight and save tons on gas. The concept of them remind me a a betle car. Small on the outside huge inside. There was more than enough room for 4 of us to sleep, cook, and eat in during the summers by the lake.

If you really like going to lakes/boating/skiing/wakeboarding, etc. then the best setup would be a moderately-sized class C motorhome. The new ones have stronger transmissions so you can pull a big ski boat behind it without stressing the transmission, and it's not a big deal to launch the boat using the RV. One thing to rememer though is that there is no "perfect" RV/camping setup. Each type has its advantages and disadvantages. It's all about giving one thing up for another.

motorhomes aren't camping

I don't want a hotel on wheels

I want a jeep, a canoe, and a smallish trailer that's good enough for sleeping, and eating inside if it rains
that's it~

I remember camping at Lake Louise and Pyramid Lake in British Columbia. Those lakes were so pristine and clear... great camping experience. Gorgeous country to go camping in.

Another trailer our friends are happy with is the A frame ones made by http://www.aliner.com/

But I still prefer a scamp.

just check out the little pop up campers, they are so little hassle from what I remember and can sleep 2 or 3 and have a little stove and that kind of stuff. Also very easy to get around where you want to go, no huge monster truck to tow it needed or anything like that. Kinda like the one Naaethyn posted, something like that.

Dude, I saw those at the RV show. They are a neat concept, but what a friggin RIPOFF those things are. My jaw hit the ground when I saw the price tag of those things. One was like $17,995 and it wasn't even as nicely appointed as a mid-level Coleman tent trailer with all the bells and whistles for 4 grand less.

Yes, that's right. We started off in BC (Victoria, Vancouver, Butchart (sp?) Gardens, and then went into Alberta.

We've got a pop up like that. This summer I might get serious and pull it and the boat together in tandem.

I wouldn't call any of that camping. Convenient definately, but camping involves a tent!

I agree, but a tent trailer at least insures the rest of the family will come camping with me

And it's harder for a bear to maul you if you're in a tent trailer vs. a sleeping bag in a tent.
